2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe Review: Exterior, Interior, Engine, and Performance

When the 2010 Mercedes Benz E-Class coupe met the world, it was clear that Mercedes was looking to shed the 'friendly luxury coupe' look that had become so familiar.  The 2010 E-Class coupe features shard angles and a wider stance, making it more of a sports coupe with luxury items than the other way around.  Offered as either the E350 or E550 coupe, this replacement for the outgoing CLK models puts this luxury coupe deep within the sports car market.2010 e350 coupe cdc.jpg

Like the new sedans, the 2010 E-Class coupes have forgone the bubbly round headlights in favor of sharp angular lights, although the dual light setup has been retained.  The long roofline from the sedan is preserved, giving the 2010 E-Class a fastback look, almost running clear to the edge of the rear decklid. The large, bolder front end still carries the massive tri-star in the center of the bright chrome grill, but the aggressive lower fascia gives the 2010 E-Class coupe far more attitude than the previous models.  Although the E-Class coupes received many of the same exterior upgrades as the sedans, there are subtle cues around the front end to separate the two, with the most obvious being the lower fascia area.

Inside of the 2010 E-Class coupe is all luxury, but the interior is supportive under stints of spirited driving.  The high-back leather bucket seats are finished and fine leather, and that leather is found throughout the cabin, from the center console to the door panels to the steering wheel.  The aggressive angles from the exterior are found around the interior as well, with the center stack meeting the shift column at a decisive angle, whereas most companies are going to a smooth flow from the console to the dash area.  The gauge cluster is the gem of the 2010 E-Class coupe interior, finished in black, white, and chrome, with a large speedometer offering the mph in both digital and on a traditional dial.

The drivetrain of the 2010 Mercedes Benz E-Class coupe is similar to the sedan lineup.  The E350 coupe comes with a 3.5L V6 making 268 horsepower and 258lb-ft of torque, and if you want more punch from your luxury coupe, the E550 offers an awesome 382 horsepower, 5.5L V8.  When powered by the V8 the 2010 E550 is capable of 0-60 times in the high 4 second range...putting it on par with some of the top sports cars on the market  today.  All 2010 E-Class coupes feature a 7-speed automatic transmission utilizing steering wheel mounted "paddle shifters", which is an item that receives mixed reviews based on preference.

The 2010 Mercedes E-Class coupe, offered as either the E350 or E550, puts the Mercedes name in the heart of the sports coupe discussion, and the likes of BMW and Audi should take notice, as this new Mercedes Benz has a great chance of stealing a portion of the luxury sports coupe market.

Do you think it was time to replace the CLK? How do you feel about the E-Class coupe? Do the power ratings do the more aggressive styling justice? Most importantly: do you want one?
