Whining noise coming from Gearbox in Rear Differential
Hi all!
I brought my 1990 Mercedes Benz 190E 2.6 to my local mechanic to have the oil changed and to have him check out a whining noise that comes from the rear of the car when driven over 40 mph. He told me that he believes the sound is coming from the gearbox in the rear differential. He told me I'd have to take it to mercedes to have them check it out more thoroughly and repair it. I'm just wondering if my mechanic's conclusion makes sense, and if so, how much would something like this cost? Thanks! |

Its probably your rear differential going out. I had the same whining in my old 190.
-When was the last time you had the diff fluid changed? Tranny fluid? -Get it changed with synthetic and you may get some extra life out of the differential.

Yeah, that could be but a bad tranny will vibrate thru the drive shaft to the rear end making a high pitched "whining" sound.
