Speedometer ????

Hello, I have a '89 190e 2.6 .... The odometer was not working, but the speedometer was fine. So I had the instrument cluster out of the car checking when I had to make an emergency run. Well, I reinstalled the cluster and did not reconnect the speedometer cable, just all the electricals and lights. As I drove I noticed that the my actual speed was showing on the guage. I knew that I had not reconnected the cable. This lasted all day as I drove stop and go and highway miles. Well today nothing is showing on the speedometer. I thought the speedometer cable was needed to operate the odometer and register the speed .... Am I off on my thinking?? Thanks for any assistance .... ... Freedom1001 ....
