smart roadster prices in Germany

Yesterday, smart GmbH released the official prices for the cars in the German market. A couple of further details were released regarding fuel consumption as well.

Here they are:

smart roadster 82 HP: 15,800 Euros (no tax price)
smart roadster-coupé 82 HP: 17,199 Euros (no tax price)
smart roadster 61 HP: 12,923 Euros (no tax price)

Some Germans seem to feel these prices are a little too steep. They would translate into US dollars at a 1:1 ratio, so what do you think?

The fuel consumption ratings are:

smart roadster and roadster-coupé (82 HP): 5.1 L/100 km overall city/hwy combined (46.1 MPG US) in SOFTOUCH mode (sequential automatic gearshifts). 0-100 km/h comes in 10.9 seconds for the roadster and 11.2 seconds for the heavier roadster-coupé. Call it about 10 seconds flat, or a tad more, 0-60 MPH.

smart roadster base model (61 HP): 4.9 L/100 km overall city/hwy combined (48.0 MPG US) in SOFTOUCH mode. The base 61 HP version does the 0-100 km/h (62.1 MPH) sprint in a leisurely 15.5 seconds (that would be about 14.5 sec 0-60 MPH). This is the same fuel consumption as the regular smart.

I think the price is reasonable. This car is a unique combination of superlative fuel economy and extreme sports car handling. You will never win a drag race in this car, but who cares? It's cheap to run and will outhandle most things on the road. The car is also reportedly very safe, and has ESP, Brake Assist, CBC, ABS and all that type of stuff.

Considering the current cost of a smart™ cabrio & passion in Germany is EUR 13430 (EUR 11281.20 without VAT) this price doesn't seem to bad.
On the smart™ cabrio, silver Tridion and jetline wheels are extra cost on top of this price.

I'm expecting a RHD roadster 82 HP with the sport pack (paddel gears, spikeline alloys) to be around £13,000 GBP. One can only wait till march with crossed fingers.

Also, consider that the 2003 model smart cabrio and city-coupé will have ESP, kickdown in Softouch mode, a 698 cc engine, and some other enhancements........and the price will be rising by 950 Euros including Mwst (about 820 Euros without the Mwst).

So compare 11758 (your figure above is low by 500 Euros - German VAT - Mwst - is "only" 16%) plus 820 = 12578 Euros for the base passion cabrio to 12922 Euros for the base roadster.

That's not bad. I think I'd have to take the roadster just on principle (better looking IMO, far better handling). Even so, the base equipment on the roadster is meaner than passion spec, but hey, I'm superficial and a sucker for a good-looking body
