the haynes manual suggests that you take the car for a short trip(about 10 miles) do not turn the car off, and then park on level ground, and then check your atf fluid level.

Thanks for the advice Timmy. I will try the cardboard and see if I can do my own analysis of the fluids. I will also take the car out for a spin before re-checking the AT fluid next time.
