My check engine light has been on for some time. I knew that the P0410 code had to do w/ emissions so I wasn't overly concerned until now since SMOG is due in order to have my car registered.
I had the air pump replaced by a mechanic who said he was 100% sure this is why I was getting the error code. He cleared the code and my check engine light went away. 3 days later it was back, and we are getting the same error code.
I asked him if he replaced/checked the relay and checked all the valves/hoses, which he said he did. When I cold start my car, I believe I can hear the air pump going cause it only stays on for around 20seconds. But I can hear a hissing sound. Could that be a leak? The hissing sound comes from the front right side of the motor. Is this the area of where the air pump is?

Since you replaced the pump, you either still have a leak somewhere or the exhaust return valve may be stuck open (if one even exists on your car, not sure). My experience with these air pumps are on E36 BMWs, which are a pretty common repair for them BTW. The Benzes on the other hand have minimal issues with the air pumps. This is the first I've heard.
When replacing a secondary air pump, it's usually a good idea to replace the hoses too. A hairline crack can disrupt air flow, cause the CEL to light up and would be difficult to spot. I say replace the hoses, make sure everything is fastened correctly and ensure the exhaust return valve is closing correctly (again, if one exists). Good luck!
