iPhone as iPod in W211

FYI Mercedes has just issued procedures and parts to replace the glove box connector of its iPod interface with a new wiring harness that snakes through the console to connect with your iPhone MHI cradle (2005-2008 models)

iPhone cradle is 204 820 31 51

iPod interface to iPhone cradle wiring harness is 204 820 03 04

WIS procedures start at AZ82.70-P-0013T

Of course we only have iPod interface in the GL and I'm waiting to learn of a harness/procedure for that vehicle.

Any reason to think it wouldn't be the same?

W211 has Becker radio, X164 has Alpine radio.

Talked with mechanic at dealership today and he was pretty certain it wouldn't be.

I'll try to find part numbers of the basic iPod kits for the two cars and surely if they're the same the rest will be, too.

Where were you able to find these part numbers?

I found it interesting the MB used the W204 in the document. Does it work with the 3G or only the first generation?

Only thing in the document thats W204 is the part numbers. The document covers solely '05-'08 W211.

iPhone

I just got a 2006 CLS 500. Is there a craddle that I can put my phone in that attaches to the dash which will charge my phone?

One-day ($18) subscription to startekinfo. I periodically check for DTBs, etc., so I'm educated when I visit my dealer.

The one I am reading - August 2008 Preliminary Draft references "MODEL YEAR 2005-2008 MODEL 211 with Code 389 (Hands-Free Communication System) or Code 387 (Hands-Free Communication System Prewiring) Retrofitting Wiring Harness Between iPhone Cradle and iPod Integration Kit" but ALL of the illustrations in the document are the W204 C-class.

On second look - we must be reading two separate documents... it seems I have two different part numbers.

You're correct, the "draft" installation document shows two harnesses. (But only talks about one, I think.)

The actual WIS procedures only reference the one harness I noted, and the rest of the procedures are the same.

You should really have the Mercedes sytem installed in your car--which will then mount the phone cradle nicely hidden in the center console. The iPhone specific cradle will indeed charge your phone.

I'm not aware of any aftermarket components that feature charging.

iPhone Charging in Cradle

I had the iPhone cradle in my e320 2005 car for a couple of months. I switched back to the BT puck. I seriously liked the fact the phone charged while driving.

The problem that concerned me was the iPhone would get SUPER hot while charging. I became concerned about cooking the phone. Charging off the wall adapter at home, the iPhone does not even get warm - let alone this hot as in the car.
