CEL P0128, need help!
Hey guys, have a quick question
It began back around 3 months ago. Got it once, didn't see it for at least almost 2 months later again (CEL). Brought up P0128 again. After that it took 3 weeks later to get it again. And then another time took exactly a week later. Now recently, it comes up every 2-4 days. My temp gauge can vary from 78ish degrees to about 84 depending the weather.
Is this indicating a stuck Thermostat? or bad sensor? I'd greatly appreciate your time of input on this one. If it is one of the two, is there a picture walk through or idea where i can find this in my engine bay to service it? Don't believe i need a dealer or mechanic to do this. I've done work on another car before i owned this one.
Also, a place where i can buy either of the parts?
Chris

I just got a CEL yesterday, scanned it, and got the same code. I called my SA at the dealer, and he said the thermostat is definitely covered under the CPO (I've got about 3 months left). So, if you're lucky enough to still be covered, then I would just take it in.
I believe the thermostat is #55/63/65 on this diagram, but I could very easily been wrong (I've never changed one). Someone who knows for sure will definitely chime in before long.
While researching it myself last night, I didn't find any DIY's specific to the W203, but there is a series of instructional videos on YouTube on the same issue.

Thanks Glyn. I guess I was right about the part and number. It's available at autohausaz.com for $32.93 plus shipping.
Since I'm still under warranty, I'm just taking mine in tomorrow morning. Might as well get a free car wash. I just hope that's all it is.

With a bit of searching i actually found a place no more than 15-20 miles from my place...
Called
Caliber Mercedes Benz of Anaheim... They were able to get me a thermostat for 25 bucks and oil filter for 13 dollars. Is that good?
And for those who aren't local, here's a website i believe:

Hi guys. I cannot seem to find the thermostat on my engine. 2005 C230 Kompressor.
Any chance any one can walk me through this or post up a picture with like a red circle circling where i can find it and what tool i will need to do this job? I only bought the thermostat itself (came with 2 "O" rings).
Thanks
P.S. having a hard time finding it.

***This is just my personal walkthrough, shouldnt be taken as professional advice or way of repair***
After a bit of frustration, i found it lol
Just follow the upper radiator hose(towards the engine block) to get to the housing. Remove the two screws and the wire clamp with a flat screw driver. After getting those 3 things off, this is where most of the labor comes in, pull out (while wiggling the plastic thermostat housing up and down left and right), the plastic housing will come right off and you will have your thermostat showing. Install new housing (take note of which direction the little pi is *mines was pointing upwards). To re-install, reverse the above steps. You're finished.
I only used a 8mm click thingy wrench to remove the two longs bolts on the housing and the top little cover to get better access. Thats all i needed. Everything cost me 28 dollars with tax doing it on your own. Time was 35 minutes (first time doing this, 2nd time should be no more than 10-15 mins with everything)
Just a FYI for you DIYourselfers!

Is there a way to tell if your thermostat is not functioning properly without visually inspecting it?
And if your do take it out to inspect...how do you know if its necessarily bad?
Thanks

Normally if the thermostat is not functioning properly, your temp gauge will not be halfway where it's supposed to, even after your car has warmed up. Also, if you squeeze the piping, it should be hot. Another way is that the heater doesn't blow hot when on full blast.

My engine light has been on for a few weeks and the dealer said it was the thermostat but I don't notice the temp going up higher than normal. Heater blows hot air fine. Did they misdiagnose? My SA seems pretty honest but again I've only gone to him 2x so far. He qouted me $380 for a $29 job? wtf. This sounds like a very easy DIY. I might just do it myself. Thanks for the info guys.
Edit: Whew...my Nissan extended warranty is covering it. But good info to know non the less!

If you click on his picture web link it's a larger size. Unless your broswer is shrinking it to fit the screen.

Thanks. It is simple and it's even easier than replacing thermostat on my integra. But I already brought it in to the dealer last night for a tranny flush and that was one thing I wanted them to check on.
