MM Package and Memory Card - SDHC

Those that have the MM Package,

You can use the new "SD-HC" format
HC- High Capacity. I purchased a sandisk 6-1 card reader $15-
(make sure it can read SDHC) and also a 4gb SDHC (on sale at CC for $49-)
and the head unit can read it no problem. Hols about 1000 songs in mp3 format and about 1200-1400 in wma format. It's also very fast.

So you insert it into that little PCMI slot and it will list the track lists on the center console?

Does the MM screen display the artist/song title if you are playing from a CD?

Yes. That little slot is much deeper than it looks. The card reader is as wide as the slot and about 3-4 inches deep

Make sure it has the SDHC logo if you want to use the HC type

Yes, as long as it finds that cd in the gracenote database

If it does not find it you can always burn the cd to the hard drive then name the tracks yourself using the control knob or the keypad

when you insert the card into the slot, do you also need to have the card reader attached?

Yes, the reader goes into the slot all the way (flush) nothing sticks out.
I leave the 6-1 card reader in the car all the time. i only remove the memory card when i'm adding more songs.

Sorry I am a little confused. But you have to have it attached to the memory card reader too in the car?? Can't the SDHC card work in the slot without the memory card reader? Or the memory card reader is a must to get it to play in the C class.

Edit.. oh I am looking at your memory card reader now. How does that reader work with the computers at home as I don't see a USB connection on it. It says your computer needs to have a PC card slot. I don't have one of those on my computer. Just USB.

I guess I need to buy one of those memory card readers that plugs in via USB to let me transfer the songs to the SDHC card and then another memory card reader to plug into the center console to read the songs from the card? The card won't work alone?

I read the description of the 6 in 1 adaptor. It doesn't list SDHC capable. Unless there is a special adaptor for SDHC cards. And it says maximum storage is 1 GB? You were able to get 4 though.

Read and write (with capacity limitations) to SD, MultiMediaCard, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, or xD-Picture cards
- SD (up to 1GB)
- MultiMediaCard (up to 128MB)
- SmartMedia (up to 128MB)
- Memory Stick (up to 128MB)
- Memory Stick PRO (up to 1GB)
- xD-Picture cards (up to 512MB, none M or H)
Works like a removable hard drive on any computer or notebook with a PC Card slot
Rugged and reliable with a protective stainless steel cover

There are other SDHC PCMCIA readers out there. In retrospect, I think I should have gotten the iPod integration kit. Makes things a lot easier.

what about compact flash?

What about using a PCMCIA compact flash reader and using a compact flash card, you can easily get the higher capacities...

Anybody know?

You need a Compact Flash type III reader for those type III large capacity drives. Normally, type III readers are thicker, the real question is though, can the MB headunit accept a type III compact flash adapter?

The thumb I attached may be old model. New model will do SDHC and it is able to read my 4gb no problem.

As far as how to get the mp3's on the card. The memory card also included a "usb adapter" that is SDHC compatible. The card reader and meory card are both "Sandisk"

Sorry, They gave you bad info. they may have not updated the website.
The new version of the 6-in-1 PC Card Adapter DOES support SDHC, trust me I have it (I will try to post a pic). It shows 6 icons on the card and it shows the SDHC right on the card. Also Sandisk has just released a 8gb SDHC memory card.

Here are the pics for the sandisk 6-in-1 reader I have been talking about that sandisk says they DON't have. Notice the SD-HC icon on the card.

The C uses pcmcia - that's why you need the adapter.

When you buy the 4gb or 8gb sandisk memory card, you can also purchase it with the "MicroMate" usb adapter

It really is much easier than it sounds. Get the pc card, get the 4 or 8 gb memory card. Copy your mp3's to the card from your pc or laptop. Insert into radio while already turned on and it will auto switch to the card and that's it. Can see the track and info on both the speed o and MM displays

Now I'm a little confused. What is the interface on the MM system? Is it native SD? I'm fine with getting whatever data/music onto an SDHC card, but what kind of slot does the card plug into?

BTW, If you're only dealing w/ an SDHC card (and not the other 5 formats), you can just get the USB reader for your PC and plug the SDHC card into it. A quick search shows that this can be obtained for under $10.

No, It's PCMCIA. That way you can use whatever you want. I use what is posted above. I have attached both the card reader and the memory card. The memory card comes with the adapter for your computer also. (MicroMate usb adapter)

the one you posted make sure it supports SD-HC the HC stands for High Capacity - They make a 4gb and an 8gb. I have the 4gb and it works fine.

Headunit supports - PCMCIA Type I and Type II 16 Bit Full size

I only chose to use a card reader so I could have several fomats of memory cards to use. The new SD-HC are compact and currenlty 4gb and 8gb

I like this better than my Iphone / Ipod interface because all info is displayed on the MM screen and speedo screen, where the iPod is only on speedo screen

In that case, why play around w/ an 8GB SDHC card? They make 120GB PCMCIA drives.

Hmmm...so would it work is the question???

I can't find the SanDisk 6in1 reader anywhere! The one that supports SDHC. Did they stop making them ? They seem obsolete almost.

2k on a 8gb mem card plenty for me, plus the additional 4gb hard drive and 8gb iphone adds another 3k of music

Also the memory card response time very fast and has no moving parts, withstands hot and cold temps better than the hard drive will.
Have not tried a PCMCIA hard drive buy native format for the car is SD and Compact Flash. I was surprised to see the SDHC did indeed work.

burning a 20 cent dvd with 4.7 gigs of music on it seems so much more logical to me....
