You need to access them from the inside, the light unit has two tabs that needs to be pressed, then you can push the housing down outwards.

got_thang? had a guide but the number plate lights seem to have vanished from the thread... Try PMing him.
You need to open the trunk and pull out the liner in order to gain access to the number plate lights. Yes, a ****ty way of getting there.

you'll need a hex allen wrench to remove the 3 (might be 4, memory foggy right now and too lazy to go check) screws on the bottom of the lid. Then remove the plugs holding the lining from the lid. Remove the wire hookup for the bottom red light. Unhook the trunk lid handle on the bottom and you can now peel back the lining. Reach in above to where the bulb is, give it a quick twist and remove. Fairly easy job.

I heard that you are working for ESP. Is there any trick how to switch off ESP completely in w204?

I work on ESP, but not for Mercedes. I believe mercedes uses silicon gyros....I work with ceramic gyros. You can always just pull the chip, but I highly highly don't recommend that

Thread resurrected!
ESP can be turned off completely.
CAUTION! THIS TURNS OFF ESP,ABS,BAS AND ALL RELEVANT ELECTRONICS SYSTEMS! DO NOT TRY THIS AND DRIVE IN PUBLIC ROADS!

Get in the car, turn the ignition switch to position I. Before the SRS (airbag) LED goes off, press the green button "Accept Call" on the Radio Unit and one second later press OK on the steering wheel , still holding the green button.
Keep both buttons pressed until you see the hidden menu on the tachometer screen which looks like that

Vehicle Data
Roller Test
Assyst Plus

Choose Roller Test, OK and then you see "Roller Test ESP: Off When Ignition is Off". Press OK once more and you get "Roller Test ESP: ΟΝ" on the tacho screen, plus all SRS/ABS etc. indicators light up!

That's it! I've had to do it on mine to get it dynoed.

Repeat the same sequence until you reach the "Roller Test ESP: Off When Ignition is Off" to activate all systems again.
