Replacement Intercooler Core for C/SLK32s

I just took a look at new replacement core that my dealer is replacing.

It looks about the same. The MB part remained the same.

However, Garrett's part number (Garrett makes the core for AMG) has changed and went up one number.

Now why is that important?

Most manufacturers when they update the part will also change part number. This gives me hope that Garrett is aware of the problem with cores leaking and has fixed it, in process updating the part number to differentiate new cores from old ones.

In the end we will have to see if it leaks again.

Is there a way we can determine if we have this problem and can our dealer find out somehow?

Thanks!

Loss of coolant is the most noticeable symptom.

To be 100% sure one of the surge tanks will need to be removed. About 1/2 hour job.

Vadim-

Thanks for the info. Can you tell us the part number for the new (hopefully improved) core?

Gracias Senor.

The part number is Garrett's number and can not be used to order it from Garrett.

Old one was, 720706-0001.
New one is 720706-0002.

Thx. (so we all know that we are not just replacing with the same krap)

Is it still $1,400? Also, what does install run, and how long can we expect to wait to get the part?

You are welcome!

The core lists for $1200, labor is 8 hours, and it is now available.

Vadim, Just checked on the MB part number and got 112 500 00 00 but there is no newer version. So the change is made by Garrett. How can you ensure that you get the new one? Also, non in the states... 2 week wait "or so" since its back order Germany.

Vomit, PM me about the cooler. Your box is FULL

There is a Garrett tag with part numbers on the back of the core.

My guess, since there are now backordered is that old part no longer exists.

I think they need to re-call all Kompressor AMG cars

If this keeps happening there will need to be some sort of action taken by MB. While there are not many C32's out there you cant have every single C32 running around with a busted intercooler core. They honestly need to recall these cars! Im calling up a friend who has a C32 and going to check her car out just for the sake of it. Its an early production 2002 but she purchased an extended warranty back at the time of purchase so at least it will be a free repair.

The number of defectove cars is getting pretty highand I know cars in Germany have been having this issue for some time as well.

Sorry to everyone who has a defective car. Its a real drag!

Im going to be buying a C32 and I will also be buying extended warranty. Im not really mechanically inclined so could I just say it is leaking in my driveway and they would go through it and chekc it out?

please turn the caps lock off when posting...thanks

as far as MB doing anything about the problem with the intercooler, i really wish that they would, but i am not going to hold my breath....i am looking into alternative options that would be better than just replacing it with a stock unit again...

I think this might be why some of you guys have this problem.

I had this problem with my AUDI I did my maintenance on the car and used the green stuff, 3 months later I needed a new heater core, that thing ate the plastic and the aluminum. I had Mercedes replaced my coolant last year and would be doing it next year again. I think its worth it. so far had no leaks, but I'm so interested with this problem because I want to make sure that I did all that I cant to prevent it.

Most of these failures have been with the original coolant so I don't see how it could be the wrong coolant.

Only a few people responded in the other thread to my development offering of a new core, plumbing, and heat exchanger. The prototype has lowered temps by over 70 degrees. The flow on the stock unit is not as effecient as other cores that can be made to spec. PM me if you are serious and I can have more than just mine made.

Yes, I am 1/3 Porsche ....I still having a ML55 in US....and my wife here has a Mitsubishi Montero 3.2 DI-D GLS Coupe...awesome 4x4 performer...it's like and Evo IX SUV, too bad than in US you do not have the neither 2 door version nor DI-D.. huge difference... and perfect for gas consummation stand point...28 mpg … nice specially paying here $4.6/Galon…

You mentioned nothing about a new core? I thought you said it was a new heat exchanger and plumbing. I am interested if it is the hole package, but the core must be included.
