c43 transmission noises

I just had my trans serviced by my favorite indy here in San Diego at 87K and 100 miles later it started making noises. They determined it was coming from the output/rear of the trans and now say I need a new one. It's a 722.631 and from what I read here, its not all that uncommon. Has anyone had luck rebuilding these? I hate to swap it out for a rebuilt core... To remove this ad, register today or login if you already are registered!

What sort of a noise is it?
Hot or cold?
Any particular gear?

Take it to Mercedes Benz of San Diego and Ill look at it. Lol Ya unfortunately if the noise is from the trans its usually only a matter of time before some finally gives. Its kinda up to you as far as how much money you wanna spend. Go with a used or rebuilt one but mainly it just comes down to money.

It just started recently when I drove about 5 miles and it is louder in neutral or park than when in gear. It sounded like a serpentine belt tensioner at first, but on further investigation by my tech, it was found to be coming from the rear of the trans.

What is required to remove the trans from the car? I have a couple of shops in the LA area that wanted it shipped to them. Other than that, do you have any recommendations for where I can take it without getting totally raped?

diy is not recommend, you need a special tool for compressing the pistons, and you need access to WIS work shop information system to find the clearance of all the clutch packs B1 B2 B3 and K1 K2 K3, also the 99 have the old valve body subs like 4 times to a 140 270 06 06, i am a tech and even after the cost of clutches seals, valve body, and if there is metal in the trans a torque converter it is just easier to buy one from someone like european transmissions, it will have a new torque converter, new valve body, and all the updated one way roller clutches and other mods, not all shops do all this and best of all you get a warranty!
