How to tell if there's a coolant/tranny leak?

On my 2002 CL, the check coolant sign pops up once every few weeks. This is the first time it's done that ever since I've owned it and now I have 102, 000 miles on it. I checked for leaks, but I didn't see anything unusual. I changed the coolant. However, once in a while, I noticed that when I shift from Park to Reverse, there is quite a bit of resistance. Is this problem related somehow?

I always get fluid flushes whenever I go to the shop but there's something unusual this time around. I just want to avoid going and fix it myself if possible. What should I do if there is a leak (in terms of DIY)?

Thanks.
