Deleted secondary cats.

Hi folks,

Just wanted to know if any members have done this. I have deleted the secondary resonators on my CL55 already and was thinking of doing the secondary cats. Since the CL has 2 cats in the front and 2 cats in the rear along with the resonator, I was thinking of taking off the ones in the rear.
From what I heard from other people, they say it will still pass smog since I still have the ones in the front unless I take those out and put in headers (which I don't think I want to go that route).
I don't know how much louder the car might be and it might flow a little better.

Looking for feedback if anyone has done this before or seen it before. The only one I have seen is on a CLK500, so I don't know if I can compare it to that.

Thanks,

Raff

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any sound clips of the car with that deleted.
Now, the concern of passing. I heard of some people in SoCal do it, but don't know if they have the hook up when it comes to test time.

I have also done this to my CL55. Here is a clip I took of the exhaust sound. Sounds pretty sweet. Tell me what you think.

i ve seen that video before,MEC are awesome, they are based in germany and their stuff is pretty pricey...i have a cl500 and took off my resonators first...didn t seem to do it as the sound was pretty much the same, then i put amg exhausts and that s when it started sounding great..i d be interested in knowing if deleting secondary cats would add to the rumble...

That is just the resonator and secondary cat delete? I love the way it sounds.

I deleted all cats on my '03 CL55. Put on Kleemann shorty headers and had a custom mid section made. 3" stainless from the headers all the way back to the resonators. Sounds f'in incredible. Also added a 172mm crank, johnson pump, and custom LET tune.

Thanks to all with the replies and feedback. Getting close to pulling the trigger(pulling the 2ndry cats) . I just got sidetracked installing links in the front. I need to do more adjustments since that thing is pancake to the floor and it's lowest setting. eeekkk.

lol,let me tell you my story,i have a cl500,sounds very quiet stock,i deleted mt resonators..little to no difference, replaced my exhaust with an amg exhaust...huge difference,it sounds as good as i d like it to..the cheapest way to make your exhaust the best it can possibly sound...delete your exhaust completely, run a straight pipe from ur secondary cats to the rear of the car, then solder your amg tips on it!!a lot of people even on this forum did it and they say it sounds great..if you wanna do it the expensive way..buy a 4000 exhaust system...

You can delete secondary cats no problem, you won't get any CEL light. You will get more resonance though (especially with resonator deleted). If you want more power and more sound while still keeping it a bit refined you can always get a high flow metal core cats. Hope that helps.

Thank you for the reply.
So, if I do the 2ndry cat delete... I will get more cabin noise inside?
Also what are high flow metal core cats... are they sold at the muffler shop or I would have to special order them from somewhere.
Its still a cat, but a better flowing cat.

I would imagine it would be a lot like the resonator delete...slight resonance increase which makes the car sound slightly higher compression-like for lack of a better word. The bass sound in the lower RPM band is more noticeable...start up sound is more noticeable also. Cruising rpm range (2k) is a bit louder along with more noise when hittting gas pedal slightly.

I like the increased noise and would not call it drone...but I guess that is what it is as even stock E55s have slight drone at cruising RPM ranges.

Thanks Timeless,

I am looking to get a bit more of a rumble but don't want an annoying drone noise in the cabin. I don't want to be cruising and just have a head ache from the noise.

I don't know your likes/dislikes...so hard to say. Obviously the stock drone at 70 MPH does not bother you now...so it is like that except a bit more pronounced...I stress a BIT more...it is not overwhelming...noticeable to someone that drives the car every day though.

300-cell metal core cats will give you roughly 10HP/12TQ while preventing any annoying drone. They will give you more bass but its not annoying (takes a few weeks for the sound transformation to complete). Also, you do help keep your emissions clean while improving performance of the vehicle (best of both worlds). For the pair its $180 shipped total. Here are the 300-cell metal core cats:

This product says it reduces backpressure. Wouldn't that reduce the low end torque on these supercharged AMGs? And would't deleting the secondary cats do the same thing that this supposedly does (10HP gain) and cost less to do?

You are over analyzing it. Both high flow 2nd cats and 2nd cat delete make HP & TQ at all rpms. None of them reduce back pressure an extreme amount to hurt power since the primary cats are still in place. The cat delete merely makes alittle bit more power than the high flow cats. Yes it costs less to delete, but you have to deal with more drone/rasp & form an environmental standpoint its not nearly as good as high flow 2nd cats which give you about 70% of the gains without any of the drawbacks.
