ACS gear selection gone

Hi there,

Although I don't own a MB (sorry) a friend of mine has an A Class, 1999, 1700 Turbo Diesel CDI, 3 1/2 years old. Yesterday, all of a sudden he couldn't get it into any gear, managed to then get it to select 1st and 2nd, got to a garage who couldn't figure it out, but they did change the microswitch that detects the gear selected and got gears back, apart from 2nd. By the time my friend got home he could only select 4th.

Any ideas at all on what could be the reason for this sudden gearbox malfunction?
