by removing the spring pad completely you wont hear the sounds, as long as it is sitting properly. You can probably call the dealer and ask what pad it is stock?

From my understanding, we have to remove spring pads completely if we install coilovers. But keep them if we install just aftermarket springs.

You will not 100% sit the spring properly on the top of the spring if you remove the pad completely. There's no pad on the bottom of the spring because the control arm designed with the groove for the spring to sit onto. As for the top, Mercedes designed a "cup" like looking with just flat bottom to hold the spring. The pad is not just used for adjusting ride height but the groove on the pad is designed to sit the spring properly from sliding. Without the pad, there's about at least 5mm of free play. Dealer is not gonna know the exact pad on any given car without checking physically. It very easy to check the pad number. All you need is a flash light. Jack up your car and use the flash light to look around the edge of the pad and you will see how many "dot"/ "knot". |

How's the spring gonna sit properly if you remove the pad? Why even need to remove the pad when the coilover kit ride height is adjustable?

Not all Mercedes models pad numbers are in same mm thickness. The pads number are the same but the thickness in mm are difference from models to models (weird huh?). The numbers listed below are for my car. #1 5mm #2 don't remember #3 don't remember #4 17mm |

completely removing the pad will make noise...i frankly dont like the noise, so i opted to get the pads shaved.
You can completely remove the pad, and add in a thick rubber hosing, and that will keep the noise down, but there still will be play. Its entirely up to you; do you want looks and sacrifice comfort?

Got bad new for you. The W209 Clk came with struts for front and shocks for rear. Which mean, there's no pad in the front (just a thin rubber to prevent rubbing from metal to metal), only pad in the rear. The W208 Clk came with came with shocks and pad all around. |

but if you take that rubber seal out, and you will get 'bout a quarter inch drop...its not that thin. ![]() you can shave it if you really want to get that extra drop, but there will be play and noise.

Taking the top rubber out is a no no because the top strut plate move when the steering wheel turn. This is why the also have a bearing plate that goes between the chassis and the strut top plate to allow the whole strut to move. Without the rubber, is like metal to metal gridding from the spring and the plate. Shave it wouldn't worth the labor you have to pay for a few mm drop that you can't tell the different. |

of course, thats why i put mine back in. but it sure did look good with it out. I just shaved mine down a bit with a CNC machine at work. A few mm is always worth it. haha
