Had my car in for service...

ONce again, my local dealer took excellent care and attention. Always a pleasure to have my vehicle serviced at the local Benz dealer.

I browsed the showroom and saw a 4 door E class AMG. It appears that MB will market anything with an AMG option. The SL sports car even has an "AMG" cosmetic option for a mere $5200. You get the decal, the silver instruments, and the seats.....but no motor or brakes or suspension.

It appears that the best bang for the buck in the entire MB lineup is the CLk500 which now is a duplicate in appearance of the CLK55. Funny that the brochure and the ads shout "all new CLK500 grill and tail." What they really should say is "same grille and tail as the CLK55 for $20K less!"

The new R series is very large but has IMO, an ungainly profile at the rear. Funny, it has big dual exhaust and 18" wheels! Hefty stuff for a grocery getter.

In the morning, my dealer put out chocolate chip cookies with coffee. I walked next door to the Lexus dealer and they were serving Espresso with bagels and cream cheese. Hmmmmmmmm??????

MB sure knows how to whore out it's high performance division. It is such a shame. I remember the good old days when I was in high school and the C36 was announced, I would salivate & dream about owning an ///AMG someday. Now, the CLK55 doesn't even do it for me. Oh well ...cest la vie.

Is this supposed to be news? *Shocking* that AMG will offer a high-performance option on a luxury family sedan?

Hint: The E50 was introduced in Europe nearly ten years ago.

Yesserie....I agree.
A real shame that there is no quinessential performance statement in the MB line (except for the McClaren, of course). Everything is confused by all powerful marketing schemes designed to extract extra dead presidents from your wallet.

I am going to enjoy watching what is about to happen over at Porsche. They are about to release a new Cayman S which is a hybridized Boxster coupe with the 'old' 911 engine good for about 290HP. It actually is more rigid and handles a bit better than the high end 997. The Cayman S will sell at $59K which is about $18K less than the premium 997. It appears that the German makers are not interested in maintaining a 'hierarchy' of performance any longer. Everything is kind of chaotic.

BTW, if you think Mercedes invented the concept of the AMG cosmetic edition over the past 15 years, be advised that for years, good 'ol Porsche sold "turbo look" 993's and 996's. They will probably do the same once they finally release the new 997 Toibo. Lots of cross fertilization over in Stuttgart.

Speak of the devil! I just saw this photo in a German mag webiste.

Now you can get an AMG family bus!

Notice the wheels and the duals. Nothing is sacred!!!!!!!
Guess I'll be going to Mr. Porsche next time.

At least with Porsche I won't be seeing my wheels and name plate on a bus.

You do realize the AMG/ML was first introduced in 2000, right?

You know better than I about the ML.
I do not follow or take much interest in the ML.

Besides, I am just opining about the condition of the MB lineup. I have never liked the fact that MB has prostituted the AMG lineup. But then again, even BMW makes a 4 door 'M' car as well. Eh.....sigh!

Initially, it was about good service at the local MB dealer but it then hung a tight left to lamentation over MB's lack of AMG integrity and significance combined with a severe dilution of AMG meaning.

It is effortlessly apparent that at the middle of this decade, makers have unleashed a torrent of super heavy 2 and 4 door muscle cars. One of the fastest cars on the street (the Bently GT) weighs in at 3 tonnes!

Remember when you thought you were sitting tall in your AMG knowing you could safely thread the needle in some traffic situation or blast by some road turd blocking the lane on the limited access highway? Well.....now you musn't be so certain. That 'boat' in front of you may actually be packing 500+ HP and 600+ foot pounds of torque. Guess the industry has redefined the meaning of a 'sleeper.'

Watch out!!!!! That's a 469HP ML AMG SUV loaded with groceries comming up on your rear quarter passing your wimpy CLK55~! <sigh>

It's a plain and simple fact that high HP numbers sells cars.

On a side note, maybe you should browse the site to gain more knowledge about the past and present Mercedes/AMG lineup.

As was said in a famous movie, Cannonball Rally...
" What is behind me...is of NO importance"

I am all too familiar with the major marques and the various sundry performance models. I have lived the performance evolution, and not just read about it.

What I am addressing and opining as a current AMG owner is the current and impending conditions of the high end performance marketplace.

From your previous post it just seemed like you're still living in the past. If you've lived through "the performance evolution" you should be well aware that the very first Mercedes AMG production car WAS four door sedan.

Buuuullllllllsssshhhiiiittt,

They cannot give these cayenne away is Australia, they drop by half price when you drive them out the dealers door. Cannot drive them on the beach because they bog and insurance is excessive because limited number sold.

All my friends that have bought one have now sold them and done there arse and gone back to normal Porsche but a lot of them went and bought the VW V10 deisel or BMW X5

And as far as handling I have driven better.

The new sports ML looks pretty good, it would want to because the previous version sold like a crossbreed dog. Between the new ML & the X5 at least someone will buy it off you at a reasonable price?

That "4 door E class AMG" has a 5.5L supercharged V8 under the hood. I'd hardly call that cosmetic changes. You say that AMG has no more performance to them. What do you call a 4-door sedan that can pull 12 second 1/4 mile times? Or the SL65? There is no performance there?
