I saw a 2004 CLK 55 for $40,000, 4010 miles! Legit??

Hello, I cant reveil the information of where i saw this or anything but, I saw a classified for a Capri Blue Clk 55 2004 with 4010 miles on it, the seller wants 40,000 for it, and claims that the car has never been in an accident, and is rarely ever driven. I emailed the seller stating...
Quote:
I am looking to buy a clk 55 or a 500, I wanted to know why you are listing your car at $40,000 dollars, when a used clk55 from 2004 is listed at a much higher price?
Has the car ever been in an accident, and have you ever suffered with any problems in the car? What condition is the car in?

Thank You

Hi,
I'm very glad that I see you are interested in my car. The car is in perfect condition of working, clean title, all services are up to date and it looks great too. The engine, drive train, & equipment are all in proper working order.
The ride is smooth, there are no shakes or pulls in the steering. Interior , well kept. Exterior, No dents, No scratches.
I really take good care of my car and I assure you will have no complains.
Well, the thing is that the car is already at the shipping company, crated and ready to go.
I had another customer in this area who said he will buy the car and after I made all shipping arrangements and paid for it, he changed his mind.
And now, if I want to retract the car I will have to pay $1,270 insurance tax, shipping fees, this is why I need to ship it.
I need to sell ASAP, and since the transport is already paid for, you can have it for $40,000 if you decide to buy now.
Where are you located? I need the full shipping addres and your receiver name.
If you really want to buy this car please email me and I will send you more details about the car and the deal.
Thanks.
I respond to that by saying...

Quote:
I would need to come and look at the car first, i cant just do this, where do you live, i live in Great Neck Long Island, if you live nearbye maybe i can come and take a look at the car. But i am a little bit suspicious of the price thats all. Do you have any inspection information or anything like that, do you have a veichle history report?

-Lawrence
She responds

Quote:
Hello,
We will use Auto Driveaway Co. (www.autodriveawayny.com) a reputable shipping company which also manages the payment, title transfer and the shipping.
Here's how it works:
The car is already at Auto Driveaway Co. in their custody, they will e-mail you the transport information and tracking number so you can see that the vehicle is really being shipped under your name.
After you receive the tracking number, the company will require you a deposit to one of their agents that supervise this transaction, so I can be sure that you are serious about buying and I'm not shipping the car for nothing.
The company will keep the money in a trust fund until you are receiving the car and your inspection period end's. You will have 7 days to inspect and test drive the car.
After the inspection period end's, if you don't agree buying the car you will get a full refund of your deposit. If you decide to keep it, you'll have to pay the remaining balance directly to me.
If you wish to go on, please mail me back with your RECEIVER NAME and the FULL SHIPPING ADDRESS so I can open the deal.
Thank you

I have the VIN Number of the car and everything, What do i do in this position, should i sell my 2006 CLK 350 for this car? I feel like its a hell of a deal...

You know what they say about too good to be true. You have to follow your gut. You seem to already be having doubts. Something must be raising the red flag. Wouldn't you be more comfortable buying from someone that will show you the car first....maybe let you test drive it.

Don't worry about losing "a good deal". Another one will come along. trust me

yea this is done 10000 times, esp on autotrader you should watch for this. Sometimes they post pics from cars on ebay and make them seems as their own.

Look at how she avoids answering your question about seeing the car ("it's in the custody of autoexpressny"). And that is located WHERE in NY??? These people have turned the internet into the new wild west.

Well hate to be a broken record but major scam. I have been on the otherside of this as well. Was selling a car, my part time business, and this scam artist went as far as sending me a counterfeit cashiers check. I already thought it was a scam and I even could tell the check was fake, but still, its just crazy. After that I had another scam artist try. It was the scam where they send you a fake cahsiers check for more than the amount, then you wire them the additional amount, and they pick up the car. Then a few days later the check doesnt clear with the bank, they hold you responsible, so you are out 7k or so depending on how much they sent you, and the car. Luckily they are pretty easy to spot.

The VIN is probably from some ebay auction or autotrader ad.

Good show!

Everyone above has said it correctly. The "deal" is a con.

The way these (and all other scams) work is that simply rely on the greed of the victim. Once the crook sets the hook, the victim becomes his own worst enemy.

I commend you for posting this example of how not to become a victim or statistic.

Be smart, find an authorized dealer and work him till he gives you the right price. You'll never regret buying a real car with a dealer that will stand behind the product. You're not buying a pair of shoes, you're investing in an expensive asset. Do your due dilligence.

i would never buy something that i haven't seen in person and inspected, expecially something that expensive.

why don't you offer to pay an extra 1200 on top of the 40K if she agrees to get the car back from the shipping company and allows you to inspect the car before buying?

try and get her phone number, address, ask to meet her in person and see if she's hesitant to do this. if so, most likely, it's a scam.
