HELP! Please.....

The last 2 days, I've been having problems w/ my shifter. When I pull into a parking spot and try to park my car, the shifter will get jammed in the Neutral position, and will NOT want to shift up to the Park position. At first, the problem was intermittment. Now, I need to wiggle it and "get lucky" for it to go into park.

Has anybody experienced something similar, or know what to do to correct this problem?

Any help would be appreciated =)

A few pennies fell into my CLK430 a long time ago and was giving the same symptoms. I had to "fish" them out after taking off all the covering pieces.

BB. do all the covering pieces just snap off, and then snap back into place? and do I need to remove the shift knob first? if so, how does the shift knob come off?

thanks,
AL

I dont remember, I did this like 2 years ago. If possible, see if you can get some long tweezers and try to pull out whatever is in there without removing the covers. I believe the bottom piece of the shift knob twists off and then the top part you can just pull straight up off of it. Hope that helps a little.

If it's not the $.02 problem, maybe it's like the $197.83 problem I had when my shifter started sounding like something was loose in the area under the console and shifted like it was going to stop shifting soon. The fix - $2.03 shifter bushing, installed at dealer for $195.80 in labor.

thanks for the input. i really don't hear any loose noises coming from the shifter ... it just gets stuck. I'm going to try to open up the coverings tomorrow morning and check to see if anything happened to fall in there.

i'll take pics and let everybody know how it goes.

update. I had my friend take off the shift knob, the wooden panel where all the window/sunshade/esp/airbag buttons are, the black plastic ring which goes around the shifter plate, and the wooden shifter plate itself. I still could NOT see anything jammed or stuck in the shifter.

Visit your Mechanic! This is more than likely a shifter control module failure. A new module will have to be coded so not a DIY job. But will get worse and have to be towed.
