Had my car Dyno'd today!

I have a 2002 CLK55 AMG, I wanted to get some base line number before I do any modifications. I found a local BMW Porsche Shop that has a Mustang Dynamometer. The Mustang Dynamometer shows real world horsepower and torque under a load at the rear wheels. This number will be lower than a Drum type dyno
Here's what we got:

The torque numbers are divided by the rear axle ratio.
The CLK55 AMG has a 2.82:1 ratio.
That puts the torque to the rear wheels when loaded.
At a disappointing 198.5.
And Horse Power at the rear wheel under a load 262.84
I now have a base line to compare to for future modifications
Just wanted to let ya know,
Tim

Why are the RWHP and torque figures so much different with the other stats I'm finding on the web....

look here:

www.mbautowerks.com/performance/00001/00001.html

Torque and hp are significantly higher in this case (prior to the Kleemann install).

What gives?

It's the type of dyno they use.
A Dynojet Dynamometer is a drum type. Is a free wheeling dual drum (shown in your example). The car's rear wheels turn the drums. And the system measures the speed and RPM. It's kind of like jacking your car up and letting the rear wheels spin freely.
The Mustang dyno is a loaded dyno, meaning that the dyno puts a load (Resistance) on the rear wheels using a electric motor. This is closer to the actual rear wheels HP and TQ that the car is putting to the road.
The Mustang style dyno is used for actual dyno tuning where as the Dynojet dyno is really only good for measuring HP and TQ.
The numbers really don't matter, there just a base line for future reference. If the new mods do what they manufacture says they should. My next dyno run numbers will be higher. I'm going to re-test the car after the first mod, that should be in about two weeks.
Hope this helps,
Tim
PS
If I had used a Dynojet Dynamometer I would of expected the numbers to be ;
284HP 292 TQ to the rear wheels.

Thanks for the information. I should have read your initial post closer as you indicated that the numbers (on the Mustang) are lower.

What is your first mod going to be, and do you have any expectations of the results?

My first mod, it's a suprise. It should be completed within the next two weeks. I'll post pics and new dyno numbers then.

Chappy... How do you like your V1? I love mine, I put my ESCORT 8500 in my work truck! The V1 is Superior to the 8500. I have two ESCORT 8500's and one V1 and thats in my 55. I wish I had three V1's. They will not get my money next time! It will go to Mr. Mike Valentine!

Got two V1's myself. Love that thing. It pays for itself almost everyday.
I especially love it when it goes off and I move over and let people pass. Then Johnny law gives them the ticket. I just drive by with a big grin on my face.
LOL

I like it!

For me, I really like having the arrows tell me where the radar is coming from.

But, I haven't used it that much....only about a thousand miles in the CLK55. I recently prepped my daily driver 300CE by hard wiring the V1 from the overhead console. I use the suction cups and just transfer from the different cars.

It goes back into the CLK for a trip to South Carolina for the Euro 2002 Auto Festival.

I don't have any experience with the Passport, but I have heard some like it....karl k??

I know some of you have seen this before - but I thought I'd add mine into the mix as well - testing K&N drop-ins

Did you make your dyno runs locally in Dallas? If so, do you mind if I ask where and what, if anything, they charged for it?

Thanks,
David

This place is a trip - lots of interesting cars. I think 3-4 pulls cost me $60-75. Make an appointment!

I live with the hardwired 8500.

Still have nightmares re times in traffic school because of doing 47 in 30mph zone w/Vette...

Motorcycle and FHPatrols use KA bands here -- and the Escort provides ample advance notice. Sound intensity - different sounds for different bands - tells me whether I am moving away from or moving to the radar source.

...the 8500 is a very sophisticated device, indeed!
