$1600 buys a lot of tranny fluid. Anyone replace a rear seal?

While at a visit to the local MB dealer, the mechanics found a leak in the rear seal of my transmission and it's $100 gaskets and $1500 for the 10 hours of labor. I've seen a few drops of oil on my driveway so I'm not too surprised but I don't want to spend 10% of the value of the car on 3 drops of oil per day. My days of climbing under cars and smashing my knuckles are gone but does anyone have any thoughts or experience on the tranny problem? I have 60k miles on a 2001. Check

that it is not the common electrical connector leak on 722.6 trans.Have you trans serviced fluid and filter changed mb spec fluid by a good indie shop that does mb's then monitor the leak if it really is the rear seal or get the new updated fitting if it is the elec plug.
enjoy the car

The "rear seal" of the transmission?

Isn't the rear seal on your tranmission is accessed by dropping the driveshaft, and pulling the yolk? If so, they must have meant something else.

+1
Remove driveshaft, remove yolk.
remove old seal.
'Press' in new seal. (Large socket and hammer )
Reverse previous steps.

Thats how I understood it too.
If your not wanting to do it yourself, I wouldn't hesitate taking it to a reputable trans shop. They probably wouldn't charge you more that $100 - $200.

Did you have any problems getting warranty work considering you lowered your car and have 19" wheels? they coverd your ball joints?
