What is a 2001 CLK55 Worth?

Just posted mine in the classifieds. Have a new CLK55 that will be in three months from now. Have been hearing horror stories from people trying to trade them in.

Seems that all of the dealers that have them for sale want 55-60K yet they only want to pay 40 to 45K for them.

I have heard from two dealers that used AMG cars are just so "Hard to Sell."

What a joke...... They are just looking for excuses to low ball all of us. My mindset is that I would take a low trade if they want to deal on the price of the car I am buying. Wholesale trade wholesale new. Retail trade retail new. Seems fair, no?

Need a better dealer in the SE and suggestions?

Looking for 53K but willing to talk. Am I out of wack?

Just be patient and sell it on your own, it's the only way to prevent being ripped off by the dealers. Never, I repeat, never trade your car in, unless you are willing to allow them to take you to the cleaners.

FYI, a clk55 coming off a 24 month lease has a residual of about 69 percent of the sticker.

See if your bank has the book with the auction sales for your area and take Theine's advice.

The used car market is in the sh**ter now and has been for over a year. Thank all of the 0% financing being offered and very soft economy. Who wants your used car when they can finance a brand new one for free. The high end used car market is in even worse shape. According to Edmunds the Porsche 911 turbo and our car have the highest residual values of any cars. Yet 2001 911's are being wholesaled around $80-82K(people paid in excess of $120k for these). Our cars were bought at or near sticker and are worth only in the mid- to upper $40's wholesale and maybe, maybe $50k if you can sell on your own. I am in the car industry and would suggest holding onto your car for 2 more years. If you are leasing ride out the term of the lease and let the retards that set such high residuals take the hit. It will be significant. I have thought about moving into another car recently but do not plan to take a huge hit $12-$16k at a minimum.
It is an incredible opportunity if you would like a car in addition to the one you have. As good as I have ever seen it. If you have a trade or are breaking a lease early it is the poorest conditions ever.
You stand to be double screwed. You will take a huge hit on your trade and turn around and pay at or above sticker for a brand new CLK55 that performs no better than what you already have. It has never been a better time to buy a slightly used car (1 or 2 years old).
I hate to see people get hammered with that kind of loss without understanding the current market conditions. I'll get off my soap box now.

Yes, somebody will want it if it is priced right. And like I said the down pressure on the market makes that price extremely low. A quick economics lesson. If there are several of the same cars on the market and they are not selling how do they get sold? You lower the price until supply meets the demand giving you an equilibream price.
Everybody thinks they can just put there car up for sale with a price they pull out of their ass and it sells, presto.
As far as the new clk55 holding its value better than the current you are crazy. For a year or two that will be the case. After that the very limited supply of w208 clk55(only a limited 2 year run) will keep the prices relatively high. For example, a used 2001 w208 clk55 with avg. miles on it will sell close to the same price as a used 2003 w209 clk55 say in the year 2005 or 2006

my brother's friend has a 2001 CLK55. He was also looking to sell the car (because he want something newer). $50-52k is about right for a great conditioned and low mile 2001 model.

btw my brother's friend still have the car. He's no longer looking to sell the car. At least not until he can find a better car more suitable to him.

I've had the same problem selling my 1999 BMW 540i/6S. I got my CLK55 about 6 weeks ago on a lease and wasn't about to trade in my BMW which I own. The dealer didn't offer me much for the car so I decided to sell it on my own.
To make a long story short, putting an ad in the newspapers or on the Internet got me very few hits. The car went on e-bay last week and was sold last night at close to what I was looking to get for it.
If you're willing to spend some time on creating an attractive auction site, you will sell your car at a good price.

Skidz1... I don't know what you do for a living, but you make a lot of sense!! I was going to trade my 2002 CLK 55 on a 2003 Range Rover. My car is like new only 4,000 miles, not a scratch. Well they would only give me $49,500 for my car and to sweeten the deal they would add $500 to round the deal to $50,000. Well I walked!! I don't have to sell my car and if someone is interested in it and has the money then so be it. Oh one thing Skidz1 is it true the lux. tax is no more as of the first of the year?

Yes, the luxury tax went away at the start of the year. The tax as it was designed was really targeting the very wealthy when buying over the top vehicles such as Bentleys and Rolls Royce. They set the threshold too low and were squeezing the middle and upper middle class. The auto industry has been lobbying for several years to have this removed and finally prevailed.
If you can't get a fair price for your car hold onto it. You have a rough idea what the wholesale is now. Even if you sell it on your own you are likely to lose serious money in this market. However you will do better if you can be patient and find a buyer. The best bet would be to hold onto it for another 2 years and then reevaluate. If it is a lease I would recommend riding it out until the end. It may sound painful but it's not like you are being asked to drive a Honda for an extended peroid of time. You have a great car, why take a bath?
The Range Rover is a great new vehicle, however they are notorious for depreciating like a rock. Your best bet would be to wait another 2 years or so and then buy a lightly used one at a huge discount. You will likely save youself $20, $30, or even $40,000.

Skudz1... I paid cash for my 55 so I don't have to sell it. I am going to take your advice and either find a buyer or just hold on to it. I really like the car so it isn't that bad.. What do you think will happen if we go to war and gas goes way up? Do you think all of the high HP cars will still be marketed?

If the war is anything like the last one it will be over in under 100 hours. But if North Korea goes crazy, duck and cover. It will be a long recovery.
Let's hope that it doesn't go that far.

I hate to nit-pick Timster, but "Northern V" is not a player. I think you meant Northern K, as in Korea, not Vietnam.

Gas prices are predicted to jump in the next few months as the Oil/gas producers, distributors and merchants gouge us, taking advantage of our fear to reap a windfall. Russia and the Saudis have agreed to up production in case of a war to keep the flow going...so it really is just gouging that will take place in the short run with prices falling back as summer approaches.

W208 CLK55 resale prices however...will continue to drop. There just aren't that many rich young-middle age men out there looking for expensive, powerful sport coupes right now. Everyone's buying real estate......

We just retailed a 2001 CLK55 w/10,000 miles (Starmark certified) for $51,000
Anything over $50K is fair market value for your car. (If it has COMAND and/or phone add a grand)

Skidz1,
We have a 2003 CLK55 available and it will be sold at MSRP, not all dealers charge a premium for specialty cars. We Never mark a new car up over MSRP! There are some dealers with integrity out there. DON'T PAY THE PREMIUM! Find a dealership (like us) that doesn't bend people over, even if you have to pay to have the car shipped accross a couple states.
