Thrilling: The CLK-GTR

No apologies are made for the fact that getting oneself behind the wheel of the AMG CLK-GTR isn't easy.

And not only because its doors open upwards (like the gullwing doors of the legendary 300SL) and you have to enter both feet first. This is the car with the cool price tag. The car made in a limited edition of 25 (despite advance orders for 200). This car is, in so many wonderful ways, the culmination of everything AMG ever dreamed, hoped or prayed for when they first opened for business in that modest garage in Burgstall in 1967. The CLK-GTR won every race it entered in 1998 and so fired up were the race-hardened professionals at AMG that they took just 128 days to get the initial road-going version from drawing board to roll-out.

The first of the twenty-five CLK-GTRs hit the streets in November 1998. The other twenty-four followed as each one was lovingly and individually handcrafted. The car is powered by a V12, 6.9 liter engine capable of 612 hp at 6800 rpm and an impressive 775 Newton meters of torque at 5200 rpm. We are talking a staggering 0 to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds and a possible top speed of200 mph. The brakes are track-honed and high performance, too. This is more good fortune for 25 of the luckiest people in the world.

I saw the last one being built around May (Right hooker), and was assured that there would be no more built.
