CF Airbox and Engine cover question

I've been considering changing the stock to CF, two reasons, first, I like the look, second, claims of HP increase in the range of 18-21hp and Torque increase: 14-18lb/ft.

MACarbon sells a Carbonio product for $1,850 plus shipping/tax and is pictured here in the attached link

http://carbonio.com/performance/bran...airboxkit.html

and has Dyno chart.

Renntech is the other vender and they sell for $2,795 plus shipping/tax (pictured in the attached). It's worth noting that Renntech's kit does not include the CF Engine cover.

I've bought product from both (CF Mirror's from MA Carbon and performance sound pipes from Renntech) and have been happy with both venders and their products.

Anyone have any opinions on either of these two products and/or could recommend another avenue I should be exploring?
Thanks
Todd

The other avenue I'd explore (if you haven't already) is a tune. The increase in hp you will get with the airbox will hardly be noticable.

I have the Carbonio airbox for almost 2 years and prefer it over the Renntech box when it comes to looks. The Carbonio has a bigger plenum than the stock box and will give you a little more power, combined with some BMC filters. However, it's not going to be a noticeable difference compared to stock...........one thing I'm certain, it looks way better than the stock box!

Just curious but other than the RennTech name what makes it $2,795 over Carbonio's $1,850? And that fact that the RennTech CF is not even full CF (as pictured) cover but only half?

Have you looked into Evosports CF airbox or is their CF Airbox the same as Carbonio?

SMP, thanks for the feedback, I think I'm going to pull the trigger with the Carbonio airbox. Jame55, good question, not sure why Renntech is more expensive the Carbonio, especially without the engine cover, that and Renntech's air box isn't that clean of a factor fit and doesn't line up with the factory engine cover.

I'll post pictures of the install. Anyone know a cost effect vendor for the BMC filters and the correct model/size?

Thanks again for all the feedback.
Todd

Thanks for everyones feedback

The airbox seems to come with filters.

It looks great under the hood!

The Carbonio box comes with a set of foam filters, which I don't recommend using, especially in CA. I tossed the foam filters and put BMC's in, in my opinion the best filters on the market.

The same reason that a set of headers for a V8 American car is less than a grand & a set for a Black is 5 grand.

You're getting hosed because the venders know that you have deep pockets.

....it's also a matter of R&D costs for production of an item that will yeild far less volume than those headers for the American V8.

How many sets of headers will Renntech sell for the BS especially given they're not the only ones buiding headers for the BS? Probably a few dozen max vs. thousands.....

BTW Todd, great choice on the Carbonio air box. Look forward to your thoughts on it.

I can agree with that up to a certain point. Will "Black" headers fit other C-Class models with the 6.3?

I've had long tube headers custom made & coated for less than $2,000.00. At $5,000.00, for shorty headers, that's just rape.

Chuck Z, thanks, BTW, in case anyone cares, it's $1,950 not $1,850.

I'll follow up with pictures.

I agree that they are terribly expensive but if you want headers for your BS are you going to have a set custom made? How would you ever know if they actually produce any power or not? Thanks but I'll stick with someone/company who's done all the R&D and can backup with dyno results that they actually do produce something other than just noise. Think you'll get these custom made headers to fit your BS (w/o mods to your BS) in high grade stainless for $2k? I seriously doubt it.

Sounds like you won't be puting headers on your BS?

I have them on mine and love them! My guy who installed them was quite impressed with the workmanship of them and part of his business is custom fabrication for Porsche race cars....

Here's mine:

Chuck Z, those are sweet looking headers, which tuner did you purchase these from?

I'm considering the Renntech headers.

In this day & age, it's amazing to me that MB bulids 1950's style log exhaust manifolds to be put on a high performance car.

They are Renntech headers. Here's a youtube vid comparing stock w/ the addition of sound pipes and then the addition of the headers:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akW30NuKdiw

The portion of the vid with the headers is not very good b/c it was raining and not really a cold start like the first two. It barks much louder than the vid shows on a cold start.

What kind of fine German engineer casts a section of elephant intestine & adds flanges to it?!?!?!?!?

We can now see what MB got from Chrysler.

Wow, Chuck Z those Renntech headers are like a piece of art work and what a great sound too! You just cost me some $$, I think I'm going to have to pull the trigger and order a set from Korey w/Renntech.
