Red face 98 e300td Ruf Iddle with airconditioner off

Any guesses? and the fuel mileage is about 26 city highway with the winter mode on. Previous owner took car to MBZ. They stated either Injection pump or ECM. Anyone with some thoughts would be a great help. The mileage on the car is only 66,000 original. Jeff

injectors or air in fuel lines, could be injector pump but unlikely....any CEl codes?

I wouldn't run in W mode unless you do a transmission fluid change....These transmissions are notorius for going out. The fuel savings is not worth the 6k repair bill for a new transmission.

The IP either pumps properly or it doesnt. No on and off as its mechanical. Besides the fact that they usually outlive the engine.

Surprised they didnt want to do the infamous comp test first. is what they usually want to do when they dont have a clue.

Is something to do with differences is load/fuel demand/supply. Could be air supply too.

Regarding S vs W. The swithc is there to be used. Many folks use W all the time as they like the sedate 2nd gear takeoff and smoother accel. HUSK's 99 turbo is chipped so is an alien concept to him (to me as well although mine is not chipped); running in W won't hurt a thing.

Maybe you just need to run it hard a few days and blow some smoke. With 10 years and 66k maybe its been babied too much.....

Talking

Im going to run some Injector cleaner and keep driving it hard. Its a great car. I did an entire tank driving hard. I did Jack rabit starts and drove 85miles an hour on the freeway. Say 30percent city 70percent highway and Managed 445miles out of the tank at around 23.5 miles per gallon. Now I can live with that but Im hoping to get over 30 on the highway.....

Definitely fill up with some biodiesel. It will help clean out your injectors. Or, you can run some LubroMoly Diesel Purge through the fuel system.

The biodiesel may loosen up a lot of the gunk that is in your fuel tank. This may cause you to have to change your fuel filters.

Ok I took the car in for some service. My water pump was on its last leg. The car had a small diesel leak and the Mech sais the Diagnostics show a code for the ECm. Whats next and where can I find a ECM for cheap so I can diagnose this. Thanks. JJ

ECM's are dealer items; available new or reconditioned, they are programed to YOUR options/security features and YOUR engine using SDS.

After 40 starts they become "married" to the car. Dont waste you time on used units; even if from an identical car. Wont work.

ALWAYS fix any leaks FIRST on an OM606.

What was the code?

I just had my ECU replaced last week. It cost me $1,350 for a reconditioned unit with installation. My mechanic had to program the ECU to my car once he received the unit. He told me it was somewhat tricky. Overall, it feels like my car runs better now.

I would suggest searching the internet for companies that recondition ECU's. I had my mechanic go ahead and replace the ECU with a factory reconditioned before I did my proper homework. Do a google search for "ECU reconditioned Mercedes". There are two companies I located: one in TN, and the other in TX. I spoke to one of their reps and he stated that I could get a reconditioned ECU, with a 2 year warranty for $600. I forgot the name of the company, but hopefully a search will get you the information you need. Good luck.

I spent $4K in repairs on my E300 in the past 8 weeks. It has not been a fun two months.

Jeff,
I found these websites:
http://ecmoutlet.com/
http://www.printedcircuitboardrepair.com

ECM remanufacture companies are all over the U.K. and Europe. I think its kind of funny that there aren't that many over here in the states. Like I mentioned in my previous post, I haven't had any experience with these companies. I found them after I told my mechanic to go ahead with the reman unit from Merc. My suggestion would be to ask a lot of questions about return policy, etc.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

We should be so happy driving MB in North America. In fact, any car in NA. In Europe and the rest of the world drivers are being fleeced by their rulers in the name of job protection and the fancy tree hugging policies.

In Scandinavia and the UK cars are so expensive people keep them for a long, long time so aftermarket firms thrived. In NA it is a matter of model year and luxury features and customers consider cars much the way they treat refrigerators and washing machines - use and throw away. There is therefore no market for customers wanting to keep their cars for a long time.
