Exclamation Turbo-ing a 240D?

Hey again everyone, I posted once before here and got no responses, so I'm hoping SOMEONE will help me with this at least. I'm really close to buying a 1983 Mercedes 240D and it's slow as hell but I still love it. My question is, might it possible to turn it into a turbo Diesel? If I decide to do so later on? Thanks...

Blow off the 240D and look for a 300D. It will cost you less money by the time you are done and it will be faster.

Ditto, pass it and look for an 82-85 300D. A turbo will damage the 240D, it isn't built to handle the added stress.

I turbocharged my 240D by swapping the engine for one from a 300D.

Cool, thanks for your responses! Speed really isn't an issue for me but I was just curious as to if it was possible, I still really want the 240D so I'll probably save up for a 87 300D in the way future. I was reading on about the subject too a few minutes ago and just like you said, it damages the engine. It's all good, I'll be snail status...but proud!

I suggest you go drive a turbo 300D before you buy the 240D. I drove a non turbo 300D automatic (which is said to perform only slightly better than a 240D) and it was a dog, good running engine, just not fast enough for Bay Area traffic. I tried the 300D Turbo and was hooked. The passing power the freeway, with the nice usable 4th gear in the auto pulling about 3000rpm at 70mph (my car is an 84) is wonderful. I've done 100 in it too and it still had something left and felt rock solid, not even very noisy. Believe me, try a turbo!

This is probably the most frequently asked question on W123 forums.

Answer is Mercedes made lots of changes to the engine before adding the turbo to the 5-cylinder.

The 4-cylinder (240D) is the same engine, but never got the changes.

You can do it, but it won't last long.

I saw a kit on craigslist, the guy had a turbo 240d and was selling basically all the parts to do another one, it's possible, personally I like a challenge, go for it if you want to.

Let us know how long you can go before you melt the engine.

The cost of those kits will usually cost as much as a good used turbo 617 engine unless you come across an incomplete kit or a killer deal.

Even if you take the 616 to it's limits the most you will reliably get out of it is 80-90hp, the same as a non-turbo 617.
