Possible new owner

I'm looking at a 1982 Mercedes 300TD. 250k on car and 90k on motor. I haven't looked at the car in person yet, but I could be doing that this weekend. Only issue the seller is telling me with the car is that sometimes the transmission doesn't want to shift into the 2nd or 3rd gear. To me that sounds like a tranny going out.

But then he said he can reach under the car, pull the shifting cable and it goes back into place and shifts fine, there is something loose internally with the cable.

So I'm assuming this would be costly to fix as it would require the transmission to be pulled apart. I'm just wondering if it could be something small to fix inside or if it's worth going after this car or not.

Any ideas/input are greatly appreciated.

Don't believe for a second that there is 90k on the engine until you see a rebuild receipt.

It sounds like the tranny is just low on oil or needs adjustment.
