I have an 87 300D with 130K, and it has a strong engine. It really goes well for a diesel. I think the problems with the 603 engine are overblown. But, if you allow the engine to overheat, you are inviting the cracked head monster. Extra attention needs to be taken in regards to the cooling system. Recalls? I know about the trap oxidizer recall, but are there others of importance? I assume you have driven both, and the 90 has enough power for you. If so, then the 90 would be the one to get. But, for performance I would take the 87. I assume that the 90 engine can have the EGR, ARV, and AFM delete performed, and the ALDA adjusted like the 87 can. Nice little boost in performance for those that tinker with their machines.
