W124 interior wood refinishing - who / where

Does anyone have suggestions on a guru to refinish the interior wood on my W124 sedan? I'd rather not try to replace mis-matched pieces. I remember seeing someone mentioned as being *the* source ... but could not find the posting.

Any suggestions appreciated.

That's the guy! What a beautiful job! I have a 1991 300CE ... beautiful wood ... also have a 1989 300E ... wood need TLC. Thanks - will contact Drew. Would you e-mail me privately with a price-range of the job (I am assuming it was a complete refinish of all wood veneer, having good substrate).

beautiful Ed! You also have the optional Gercia? wood.

I've heard others recommend http://www.maderaconcepts.com

If I recall it was about $450 ? a few years ago.

He strips off the Mercedes clear coat, stains to match all pieces, then coats with a system equal to the factory clear coat.

My wood is the standard Zebrano that came with the 1988 124's...

After I got it done it brought back how the woods looked when I took it off the showroom floor in May of 1988

Gotta say that looks beautiful!

I wanna know what clear coat he uses to get the "depth".

What seats are those too!? They aren't the stock 88's

Seats are the stock 1988...

Clearcoat that Heritage uses is an improved catalyzed product similar to what the factory used on the 124.

Veneers very rarely crack and split on these cars.
The cracks and hazing are typical in the clear coat.

I happen to work as a custom cabinet maker, we do just about everything with wood. precat and post cat both have their advantages, its just a matter of the build. the finish builds really thick with the post catalyzed. so it's just a matter of preference.

Did that include the doors and center storage console? I remember being quoted $325 a year or so ago (as well as yesterday) for my 89 300E. My 300E does not have the center storage console, nor does it have wood on the doors, nor does it have wood over the glove box - just the center console where the window switches & gear shift are located ... the ash tray and trim piece ... and up to, and around the HVAC switches.

He needs the wood for a few weeks. I can probably find someone cheaper ... but, at the price quoted, it's not a wallet breaker (especially for the quality). If $450 included everything else ... it's probably a better deal. I will post before & after pics in a few weeks.

As for the pics of the seats ... my 300E has Tex, and the ribs / pleast go the entire length of the seat bottom. My 300CE has leather, and it has the wide trim piece at the front (and sides) of the seat bottom (but I forget if it has the pleats).

Steve...

I lied...I found my invoice it was $292.50 labor ( 6 hours @ $45.00/hr ) + $32.50 material for a total of $325.00 on 11/8/2006.

This was for the four main parts...console, ashtray surround, ashtray door, and climate control surround...took him about eight weeks.

The 1988 300CE didn't have any wood from the factory other then the main pieces.
I added the console box from a later non-glove compartment model along with additional dash pieces.

Where in suburban Philadelphia are you?
I lived in Bryn Mawr for 25 twenty five years before moving to the Delaware Beach in 2003...

Ah ... so pricing makes sense, and reasonable (in my opinion). I am in Montgomeryville ... about 35-45 minutes from Bryn Mawr ... at the end of the Blue Route, and off of Route 202. Hmmm, so perhaps I waved at you driving by a few years ago. Now that I think about it ... you DO look familiar!

Ah I guess the CE's got leather in 88? Booo.....

I still gotta finish my up wood project. I love how the wood looks with the extra pieces. How did you get the one that goes around the wheel to fit? I took one from the junkyard, but the curvature of the wood + the steering wheel is slightly different...

Also what did you use to attach the wood to the dash? I used to strong double sided tape, but in the sun it ended up falling off after 4 months.

Beautiful interior, RBYCC!

You're a class act in here, BTW...even under full attack, you account for yourself extremely well.:-) After seeing a pic of 'You Know Who' driving a car, I had to laugh. And with the last attack by the pseudo philosopher, I figure it's much more interesting to stay with the technical stuff.

I have a quick question on the ashtray....Is that a different type of ashtray or did you just remove the "handle" of the stock one? I think it looks a lot cleaner.

How does yours come open? Do you have to push it for it to come open?

You can see how mine looks here:

Coupes didn't have the "handle"...push in and it pops out !
But to be different I did add one last year....

Merc had a few trim variations between the sedan, wagon, and coupe.
The 1988 CE was probably the most plain of all the coupe interiors with the "no frills" door panels.

The question why I ask is for refinishing purposes....that handle is going to be a nightmare to do....so I was thinking of just pulling it off completely and wondered if the mechanism on the CE is any different. I would assume its a push design, correct?

Mine pushes Psycho. I also have some different buttons on the clima section and I also have wood trim below the speedo cluster. Weird, I never knew they were different.

The wheel must be different too, or at least the housing around it.
As you can see, it doesn't fit right. The curvature is different:

PS: Once I cut it right, I think it will look very slick

I have always hated the wood in Mercs and if i find the right E500 W124 i'll be wrapping the interior trim in Carbonfiber fabric like I have on my E46 M3
