If you're looking for a deal...I found it. I needed some new winter tires and found these on tirerack.com. They're trying to sell these for the new michelin's that came out. From $181 to $109 is not bad. Oh, and before anyone asks, I'm not a tirerack rep. Just a happy customer trying to pass on the savings to fellow mbworld'ers.

from mercedes would state that pilot A/S are problematic on the E class.Alignment issues,I would steer away from that deal unless assured they will not cause you unending grief trying to solve drift issues.

ohlord is right

I had those tires and as they wear down become VERY noisy ... there's a Daimler Service Buletin on them:

..what would you recommend? I'll be needed new rear tires (275/35R18) before it starts snowing here in Boston. I was looking at some Mich Pilot Sports. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

do you guys seriously use pilot sport and similar tires on snow and ice? Those are summertires aren't they? At least over here they are high performance summer tires able to roll about 10 000 kilometers/6500 miles before they are worn out...

There is no such thing as all-season tires. Or, there are tires called all-season, but they are crap on both summer and winter. Go for dedicated winter tires in the winter and dedicated summer tires in the summer...

I know the rubber over the pond is not the same as the one we use here in northern europe, but the rubber in our winter tires usually doesn't perform at all when the air temperature is over 4-5 degrees C (with 0 as the freezing point). Then I'm talking about winter tires, not "winter tires" from china or korea or whereever. Summer tires doesn't perform when temperature is below that.

Pilot Sport A/S are all season, as the name implies. These are my winter tires. In summer I use Eagle F1 summer tires.

I do fine on them in normal snow conditions. Of course I won't attempt to drive up an unplowed hill. In this region, any significant snow is cleared within hours. The winter performance of the Pilot is as good as any all season tire. Anything better would have to take the form of a Blizzak or similar.

Semikolon, so you probably should not bother with tire advice for a US driver if your formulations are so different.

The Pilot Sport A/S is rated near the top of treadwear ratings of any tire in the world. In fact, I have projected mine will reach the wear bars at over 40,000 miles.

6500 miles would apply to a drift racer.

oh, I didn't get the A/S part when I first read the thread...

But still, if you have real winters, there is no such thing as all-season. All-season tires also does not perform very well on warm summer roads as there is no such thing as rubber which works on both cold and warm roads.

Thank you very much RBrenton. I'll look into the Pilot Sport A/S. Hopefully I can get a good price...

Ok, another dumb question.

What is the difference between Sport A/S

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Pilot+Sport+ A%2FS&partnum=735YR8SPORTAS&vehicleSearch=false&fr omCompare1=yes&place=37

vs the A/S Plus?

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Pilot+Sport+ A%2FS+Plus&partnum=735YR8PSAS&vehicleSearch=false& fromCompare1=yes&place=38

...besides the price of course!

You guys are missing the salient points. The E55 on 275's is not going anywhere in the snow
Boston, you need a set of stock 320 rims with 215/55/16's real winter tires
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compar...6&startIndex=0
etc.mounted on all 4 .If you even hope to drive in snow or ice.It will not matter if you put brand new deep tread A/S 275's on the rear. You will either have the crap scared out of you or wreck the AMG.Disneyland has mr.toads wild ride,be prepared for the Boston version

215's you can chain up all 4 and go anywhere.

Grrrr...NOT what I wanted to hear, but it's the truth. I already knew that this beast would give me trouble in the winter. Thank God I can leave it parked and covered for the really bad snow/ice days and use my girl's 07 FRONT wheel drive Honda Civic!

Thanks for the input fellas...

P.S. Take a peek @ my Grill insert thread. Let me now if you have any input there?
