Drive train whirring noise

I have been advised to list this thread in the w210 area as notwithstanding I have a w211, I am told "Oh Lord" has been knee deep in drive trains and inhabits this region... so here goes....I recently noticed a whirring noise in the drive train of our E320 (2003) 86000 km (wonderful vehicle, well maintained) in the region of the gearbox softly noticeable outside at idle and also in the cabin when driving. Sounds to me like a bearing? any thoughts as to where to look first? We have changed auto trans oil which seemed to reduce it a bit and confirming a bearing possibility (?). It has now returned to prior levels. Any past experiences valued. Thanks. To remove this ad, register today or login if you already are registered!

any problem with transmission shifting? this could noisy oneway bearing inside the torque converter, check the ATF for any metal particles.

My failed rear wheel bearing was difficult to isolate without chassis ears, but it was a droning sound. Still a high probability culprit.
