not shifting past first gear

My car ,2002 E320, wont shift past first gear!!! even when i put it into drive and try to shift manually, it only stays in "D". When i shift into reverse or drive, it bangs into gear. Oh yeah the check engine light came on and i haven't gotten a chance to check the code. this happened to me before and i shut off the engine, waited a few seconds and tried to start. It wouldnt start!!! i waited 3 minutes and it started right up and began to shift smoothly again. I need help! any ideas! i can use the help!! i just hit 105K miles, dont think the tranny fluid has been changed since i got it tho if it helps.
