No way, it worked!!!
So with the new comand, you won't need a dvd drive in the trunk anymore?

Very nice graphics. The nav finally looks like something from this decade! Is it a touchscreen? I dont see the soft keys on the side of the screen anymore.....
Kudos on a great install.

Is there a difference between the US and Euro NTG COMAND now or are they one and the same? (other than the loaded maps?)

This one is not touch-screen (which is good in my opinion ), it is controlled with the Comand controller, oops since that is missing from the current E-class, from a similar button on the unit itself.
The Sat radio option is not visible on the buttons as it must appear on a menu, the "Back" button is different by looks, the rest seems externally the same.
This one does have an integrated navi processor (HDD for maps), no need for the trunk unit.

The radio has bluetooth built in, sat and hd radio (needs external module--different than 03-08 sat unit), hard drive nav (see birdeye view), 6 disc DVD changer, nicer layout....
....and lingtronic voice control. Who needs touch screen when you can recite you adress verbally--phone book also downloads from my Blackberry and contacts are all voice tagged instantly!
I do not think this radio swap falls under "plug and play". I would not even recommend for the "experienced" DIY'er. Lots of wiring, need access to STAR wiring to even attempt!!!! (www.startekinfo.com) If you are VERY addept with car electronics, then maybe it can be considered....

Looks great, man. I can only imagine the time involved, headaches, and cases of beer needed to pull off this upgrade. Very ballsy.
How much was the hardware cost? And do you think added features was worth the price?

I think it was worth it---I got a smoking deal on the COMAND and amp.
This Luangtronic is amazing, I can voice dial by name in my phone book (w/o previously programming a voice tag) or say the name of street and town for the navi. Also the new HK amplification and tuning is waaay better sounding--
I gotta a lot of gains---Car had COMAND w/ HK and Navigation----I did upgrade to a Euro COMAND for DVD---no phone, no voice control
Now--COMAND, 6 disc DVD, Bluetooth phone, Navigation (w/ birdseye view), Luangtronic Voice control, HK
If you were paying for the labor, it would probably not be worth it, if you have the skill and can find the parts for a reasonable price DEFINITELY worth it---After I eventually sell the old COMAND, Navi, AGW, and CDC my out of pocket expense is not too high.
There are no softkeys----layout is like the S or C radios but w/o the central controller---you use the arrows to navigate

Is ipod integration a separate module? If not, would you need to add a cable? Also, does this support a hard connection to the phone (for charging and use of the external antenna)?
Thanks and again, great work...

I am unsure of phone cradle options being added.
I-pod can be added with the multimedia interface. It already has a SD card slot that accepts up to 2Gb cards (3 pack is $25). This is good enough for me.
I think the only thing I will add is the Sat/HD radio control unit. This will give HD FM tuning and XM Nav traffic.

System looks great ... must have been lots of work .. !!!!
Did you have the bluetooth puck and ipod kit before? If so does it come down to just a better nav device and better sound?
The sad part is that the previous generation COMAND can really be upgraded to a similar setup via a software upgrade and by replacing the trunk Nav unit with a HD based one. It can be as easy as swapping out the device with a HD!
But I doubt there is enough interest for the development effort ..
