Need serious help OIL/airfilter/cabin air filer

HI everyone,

Purchased a e500 2004 about 6 months ago, at the time it showed that i needed to do a B service in 12k which i found out that is oil and oil filer change.

about 1 month ago, it started showing c service in 8k km. also right now the ride does not feel the same, kinda less power here, benz dealer told me that i need "special engine oil" is that BS??.

next thing what is C service can i do all this myself.

i would be very helpfull if someone would direct me to the right Direction, what type of oil "mobil 1"??

where to by my oil filter, air filter and cabin airfilter.

and how to change all this.

my two cents...

since you bought the car used and you aren't sure about the oil and service requirements of your car I would guess you don't know a whole lot about the car. Not a problem, but I would recomend you suck it up and let the dealer do the service and let you know what you need. This way you are starting out with all your service up to date and have more of a level starting field. As time goes you will learn more. Your dealer does not have to be the enemy, just be educated about your vehicle and be humble. The service department deals with Jackass customers all day long. And no, I don't work for a dealer, I just pay attention.

As far as special oil? that is debatable, you need quality oil that meets or exceeds the mfrs specs. Search for coupons, go to your dealers web site, Mercedes is really riding the dealerships hard on providing 'Great' customer service. Just be nice, polite, yet firm. Your goal is to build a relationship with the service department and service manager. Then when you really need help, they will know you.

Ok, I am going to say something that may tick you off, but don't take it the wrong way. You can't go out and buy a used car that went for 60k plus when new, now goes for 18k used, then complain because service is expensive for your 18k car. Mercedes parts are not cheap and the engines have twice as much oil in the crankcase than most non euro cars. Mercedes, BMW, AUDI all of them, service is not cheap. Their prices are clearly marked and you should just keep checking their website for coupons.

look for coupons, I can generally get an oil change for 89 bucks, my A service is 200 or so and B service is 350 or so. I can't complain, it cost just as much to service my Jetta TDI.

thank Baron,

i know MB driving is not cheap, but so far i got of cheap changed both ball joint for $120 myself, dealer qouted somethin like $400 each side, plus the alignment $250, all i need is to find out if sentetic Oil is ok to put in this car, because we have two MB dealers in our city and both is owned by the same person, they charge alot. i just installed today a set of new tires which original i would of paid $1400 to MB, but end up paying $1k which in canada is still Ok. everything here is overprices unlike us. but all i have to say i got this car for a good price compared to dealer price with more miles.

The oil called for in my 2004 E500 was Mobil 1 A FULL Synthetic 0W40 "oil" ,,, is that what they mean by "Special"?

always get an extra liter.

Make sure you get the correct oil filter. I believe you need a fleece type oil filter with the 229.5 oil. There is a lot of good information on here and now that the members see you are serious and not just wasting time, you will get more than enough help.

I feel for you man, it stinks that the dealer is over-charging but many times if you can establish a relationship with the parts department, they can provide you with a lot of information and many times print outs of what you need.

Use Mann filters for oil, air intake, gas, etc. and you won't go wrong. Look up the stickies they are very clear and hardly few topics have not been touched. And, if you do not have one, get an owners manual and a shop DVD if you need.

Recently, I was at Walmart buying the Mobil 5-30W extended service oil for my G35, 5 qts at only $26. Out of curiousity, I found Fram makes the E500 filter, and Walmart sells it. So I bought the Fram filter and will use it for my next oil change.

Make sure is a fleece (polyester) element, not paper. This is what you need with synthetic oils. Remember, this is not the old time rocket from outer space, but a state of the art Mercedes motor car.

alright i called service departments of the two MB dealers in the City, and one said they use 5W30 for all the E500s and the other said 5W40, i have used 5W30 which is very common in Canada due to the intence cold weather, i have experienced -50 with the wind, and my previous SUV started with no problem on 5W30. and for the oil filter i will for sure get the Fleece one. JoeVal suggested Mann filters.

agian i very happy to see there is soo much help here in MBworld forum. you guys are great. i will post a picture of my car soon once i wash it weather has been **** in the past weeks everytime i decide to wash my car it either rains or Snows. and it happens to be 2 hours after i wash every time.
