Here's the link to the article: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-f...7378935.column
For anyone who says Neil doesn't like MBs, that's not true. He's written many positive articles. He's fanatic over the Black Series. But, like many auto critics, he's not keen on the W212 design. (and neither is Jeremy Clarkson, fwiw.) People have barked about it here (both positive and negative) and on just about every car forum (even BMW forums, etc..) The exterior design is controversial. Eventually the controversy will fade away as the car becomes mainstream. "In my review of June 12, I said the sedan was "very proper and Swabian and gloriously unartistic." In the months since, my opinion has only soured. I hate the way the car slumps at the head like a pole-axed buffalo. I loathe the over-shaved, winnowed taper around the grille. I detest the graceless quadrangle of windows on the sides. I gag on the exaggerated accent lines on the fuselage that don't visually intersect with anything in particular. It's a terrific machine, but really, the E Sedan's homeliness has a kind of malign ambition about it." I'm glad to see he wrote a positive article about the coupe. That's great.

Oh-Oh This guy must be another jealous W211 owner.I agree with him that the design comes together much better on the coupe, but it's still a $50k C-Class Last edited by MBNUT1; 09-26-2009 at 09:14 PM. |

call it whatever. it is a step in the right drirection in design from where the CLK was and more toward the CLK was in the 90's.
The car over all has more upscale feel and features than the C class. Hence they have to badge it as something different so you cant make the same comment you made earlier that it is a $50K c-class followed by something like why would anyone pay over $50K for a "C" class. Honestly, i don't think MB's alphabet soup had gotten that out of control to drop the clk nomenclature. Besides, there was a C coupe (& still is in europe) and even though I owned one a while ago it was an awful cheap mess of things. in retrospect, i should have bought a golf GTI instead |

Ya, E coupe is a big step up from CLK. CLK wasn't a good name cause if kind of interfered with the CL name, but then again, the CL will be leaving soon as well for the S coupe.

Ouch: "Only one reason: The E Sedan is beastly looking. In my review of June 12, I said the sedan was "very proper and Swabian and gloriously unartistic." In the months since, my opinion has only soured. I hate the way the car slumps at the head like a pole-axed buffalo. I loathe the over-shaved, winnowed taper around the grille. It's a terrific machine, but really, the E Sedan's homeliness has a kind of malign ambition about it." I agree with him of course, but I actually like the Sedan more than the Coupe, lol. I just can't get into the proportions of the Coupe. Although it is more graceful than the Sedan, IMO it just looks even more jumbled and awkward. Also, the interior is clearly that of a C-Class (very bad thing as the W204 has an embarrassing inside) more-so than an E-Class IMO, although it is still much nicer than the C's. Every time I refer to the E-Coupe, I naturally want to say "C-Coupe", not even trying to make myself say it either.

What's the big deal about using a C-Class chassis?
To me that's like getting upset that Dodge uses the E-Class chassis. |
