GL320 Oil

I'm in line to receive my GL 320 at the end of Sep 07. Does anyone know what weight oil is required for the diesel engine? Of course, I could have asked my dealer, but it didn't dawn on me at the time. Thanks. To remove this ad, register today or login if you already are registered!

They are really promoting the synthetic oils, specifically Mobil 1, along with the fleece filters. The owner's manual lists several approved manufacturers and viscosities.

Actually you're only going to be able to find ONE approved oil for this engine.

And, you can ONLY purchase it at a dealer or possibly online.

It's formulated to avoid damage to your diesel particulate filter, and you'll void the warranty on that if you use an oil not approved.

Mobil 1 5W-40 ESP Formula M

If "ESP Formula M" isn't on the bottle, it's the wrong oil.

I've asked about this from the dealership I go to and he says that the Mobil1 5W-40 that you see in any auto parts store as long as it says synthetic oil is fine. He says that the oil they use only says Mobil1 5W-40 and come in a big drum. The one I saw from Advance auto parts says Mobil 1 5W-40 Synthetic oil for Diesel engine. I guess this is the same although it does'nt say ESP Formula M. Can anyone confirm this.

It does exist so I wouldn't take a chance on anything else.

Thanks JPEARDM. Where did you get it as I've checked Advance auto parts as well as Walmart and some Napa auto parts and have not seen it.

Your dealer is giving you bad advice.

Go by the book, as your dealer must.

I looked for days, you won't find the Mobil 1 ESP anywhere but the dealer. I paid around $6/qt at my dealer, just cuz I always feel like I need to have a quart of oil in the trunk.

Found this discussion about the oil for the MB diesel engines. It's very specific about using Mobil 1 5W-40 ESP Formula M.

The "Factory Approved Service Products Manual" (April 2007) list 3 brands that meet 229.51
1) Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40
2) Valvoline SynPower MST 5W-30
3) ELF Solaris LSX 5W-30

Oil Changes

This is venturing a little off topic but has to do with the engine oil for the DG320 diesel - my dealer told me that they would change the oil every 5000 miles at their expense if I do all service 1's and 2's with them. So my interval would be a comped oil change at 5000 miles, again at service 1 at 10000 miles(i think they do that at service 1), then comped again at 15000, etc...

Anyone else have this understanding of the oil change schedule? ...Dan

I would think that more oil changes would be better than fewer changes. Of course, this depends upon how much your services cost; he has to pay for the comp service somehow.

I paid $6.61/qt. + tax for the Mobil 1 ESP at my dealer today. Didn't look at freight costs from the site above (they were $7.125/qt) but couldn't imagine that they'd ship free.

Found out that the dealer in Salisbury, MD sells the Mobile 1 ESP 5w-40 for 5.90 + tax. Am going that way this weekend and will pick up a few cases. The dealer I'm buying my GL320 sells it for 9.25 and the cheapest dealer in the DC area sells it for 6.67 (of course you have to pay tax on both prices).

I'm sure that it would be coming from a MB dealer, but just make sure it's the formula M version as there are other ESP types made.

This is a very interesting thread ...........

When we picked up our 08 Gl 320 I asked the sales rep to check with the service manager to verify what oil they used for the 08 diesel.

Response was any Mobil 1 5w-40w......... nothing special. This is clearly wrong.

That was your mistake... Sales reps in my experience over the years will tell you what they THINK it is but rarely will they take the time to verify.

By the way, I was on a recent road trip and the "Check Oil at Next Fill Up" indicator flashed.

I checked the dipstick and sure enough, the oil was in about the middle of the Full and Add marks. Since I am a firm believer in keeping the oil in a car topped off, I stopped at a gas station and I was able to find a quart of CJ-4 rated oil... This is not necessarily one of the approved oils, but I am sure that it will work fine as a substitute until the next oil change.

I can't really imagine calling Mercedes Roadside Assistance and asking them to send a tow truck, because the vehicle is low on oil and I can't find the approved oil anywhere...

Anyway, here is the oil that I used...
