E55 vs. Newer BMW 740i

So I got my first kill of the New Year!

I lined up with a newer BMW 740I. He pulled ahead so I could not see in, but as I noticed that the light was going to change so I inched forward. He did not acknowledge me, but at the green light he took off.

His launch reminded me of someone learning to drive a stick for the first time…. Hard pick up of the nose then slammed down before a stall. Anyway, my Michelin Sports decided that they were cold and not in the mood for racing. He jumped ahead by 2 cars and I was stuck while the traction control handled the wheel spin. When I did get enough traction I walked by him so fast I could not get his expression. I took it up to 60 or so and he was bus lengths back.

I had to slow down for traffic and he came speeding up on my butt. This brother sat a couple inches off the rear end until I saw a gap, shot it, and again was history.

Great way to start off the new year

I hate cold tires too, it makes racing from a start with a 500 hp car difficult.

Never figured those were worth racing and you proved my theory.

I know it is easy to embelish these stories, but I do not see how a car gets two lengths on you and you finish off with bus lengths all at 60 MPH. Surely you were being modest and really stopped more around the 90 mark.

Nice kill but the 740i is no way close to the E55 speed.

I saw the title to this thread and thought...."what a disaster that must have been"....looks like I was right.

I'd like to get a hold of one of the 760's (V-12).....still not sure it would be close though.

Nice kill bro-

That's because normal people "roll" on to the throttle.

I had the 740i sport, with a higher stall speed torque converter and better final gearing. It definitely was very quick off the line..I can see its getting the better of my E55, albeit very briefly

All-season tires are harder than summer tires which makes it even harder to hookup.

The 760 would not be close at all. My old one ('03) was no slouch but it felt no quicker than the CL550 I test drove. Mine had 438hp, not sure if they bumped that up as they got newer but its not much of a competition, maybe an alpina B7 would fair better but you'd still destroy it..

Actually when the temps get cold 50F or below the summers are the worst! They get hard! I know because I have experience. All seasons are stickier in the cold.

I should've figured that out That's what all season tires are for.

Back to the topic at hand...

How do all season tires get hard in the Summer and stickier in the winter?

Do you understand the properties of rubber?

The tread pattern on high performance allseason tires are alot diiferent than the tread on high performance tires built for dry or even wet roads. Yes they have a little harder compound but the winter weather is not gonna make the allseason rubber softer/stickier. If anything the rubber gets harder making the tread pattern of the tire even more important. This is common sense.

Tread pattern and tire temp rating of the tires is the thing that really makes the difference for allseason tires vs tires for summer driving only when it comes to traction.

So let me get this straight. It's a newer 740 and it had a manual transmission OR the guy's foot slipped off the throttle?

I think he's saying that all-season tires do not react as severely to cold temperatures as high-performance tires? It's not just rubber, its many compounds and formulations.
