My S65 vs. a Ferarri F430

This is NOT a "kill" story, but thought you guys would like to hear about it.

I was on the way to a friends 4th of July BBQ yesterday when I came across a Ferarri F430.....on a 3 lane highway that was completely dead and we had about 5 miles of nothing but straight, open realestate in front of us. There wasn't a car as far as I could see in front of me.....you couldn't have painted a better picture. It was "go time" for sure.

I actually saw him up ahead of me from a long ways back- I thought from a distance it might be a Z06 or ZR1....but once I got closer, and I realized what it was and I started chuckling......"You're kidding me , right? What's the catch? Am I on the next episode of 'COPS' or what?...."

Anyway, I gladly rolled up beside his driver side door- in 3rd at 80mph......I looked at him twice and motioned "lets roll" with my hand......I got the typical stink eye from the Armani sun glass wearing 50yr old...and a look like "oh great, another nimrod in a slow car who wants to race." After blipping the throttle twice, he bit.

He got the move and put half a car on me immediately, and then not quite another half a car length until I got into 4th....at this point he was just shy of a full car ahead of me. I hit 4th and immediately started reeling him in......at a decent rate as well. The minute my front fender got to his drivers side door and was getting ready to go by him, he braked and got out of it....WTF? There's NO ONE around us.....I was a bit irritated that he braked so early (about 120?) and I was also afraid he wouldn't do it again unless I antagonized him a little more, so I hit my hazzards as I rolled by him .

Sure enough it worked....he came up to me a second time. We did the exact same race from 80mph and I was better prepared this time. He didn't get quite the move this time as he did the first time, but again he put about half a car on me until the 'ol mighty V12 hit 4th.....and again, I started suckin him up fairly bad. I wasn't going to go "flying" by him by any means, but make no mistake, I WAS going to pass him, end of story. The second my front fender was getting ready to go by his, he braked, again Then, he sat back at 65mph and wouldn't approach me again even though we still had another couple of miles ahead of us.

As he exited he struggled to even look at me....I rolled down the window and gave him a thumbs up and he returned the same with a huge smile on his face. I'm not sure how much he knew about the 65 before this, but I can guarantee you that he at least knows what one is now

That Ferrari???....."wow" is all I can say. That car is sexy as hell and it sounded incredible.....loud as HELL. I was really caught off-guard by how loud it was....and it sounded mid-evil

I still think I made the best purchase ever when I bought my 65

They have exhaust by-pass valves that open up at full throttle on the stock exhaust system. They do sound good. Thanks for sharing.

Gorgeous car. Nice story, too bad he would slow down once he was getting passed.

it's like tipping your king in chess. he knew the game was lost and maybe wanted to save face by being green. why waste the gas?

if you think the big MBs get bad mpg, try strapping on a Ferrari at WOT

Bellisimo - great story. I have done that before when racing in a lighter but underpowered vehicle. I would jump ahead but be getting reeled in by the stronger opponent. Run up to about 130 and then let off and ask him if he wanted to race again?? It is a pricky thing to do but if you are in front, you kinda hold all the cards, lol.

In fact I had this happen recently when I got challenged by a Dodge turbo diesel pickup (note to all these muthas can be really fast). I was not in the benz and did not let off but I passed him and got about 1.5 cars ahead and then much to my dismay (not surprize) he began to very slowly reel me in. About 1 foot every 5 sec. Fortunately he let out of it before I did and I was still up by a car but props to the big diesel. Owner said it had a banks kit in it and a bunch of mods and 48 psi of boost. Good for about 5-6 hundred hp and 1000 ft lbs... Yowzer

What were you driving and 1 foot every 5 seconds is not very much. Hell by the time you would have been caught Im sure there would have been a reason to slow down. Unless you were racing in Mexico, those roads can go for days it seems.

I was in a very highly modified MR2 turbo (2 liter DOHC four 3SGTE engine). It is a high 13 sec car and more suited to the road course than a drag race. 1 ft every 5 sec is not much and we were gonna be deep into triple digits before he caught me, if he caught me before he ran outta gear. As quick and fun as the MR2 is, the AMG is faster. BTW: that little encounter was in Mexico. Sonora if I recall correctly.

Props to Busa for keeping up with the F430. Those are quick muthas.

Actually the bypass vacuum hose is disconnected and capped. That causes the loader exhaust.

The guy in the ferrari braked every time you were gonna beat him cuz he couldn't have gone to his friends dinner party that night and say "i got beat by a four door merc".... IMO, there are way better cars than an F430 for less money, Im thinking 2006/2007 S65? you get Fcar killing performance for ~$65K, not to mention four doors, a trunk, and the right to say "yes I own a V-12, with turbos"

My $.02,
Rick

If you think the F430 gets bad MPG, try driving my father's Gallardo... that thing gets about 2-3MPG on the track and about 7.5-9MPG everywhere else.

take it from someone who went from a V12TT Benz to an F car...it is not always about straight line acceleration. If that was the case, I would have bought a ZR1 instead of a slow, used Ferrari with only 400 (yawn) hp.

I rarely street race now mainly because the police will look for an excuse to pull any Ferrari over. No matter what is going on, the F car will get ticketed or worse and the other cars will get off scott free

Ferrari is the car that every other car on the road wants to be, so why race? We really have nothing to prove...

Second that - I went from a Rennteched 700hp SL65 to a Lambo LP560-4 and have not looked back. The straightline acceleration of the 560, which is faster than my SL65, and the insane handling in the canyons has made me not look back. Two different cars completely, don't kid yourself when an F430 car or Lambo LP560 backs off or are not interested in street racing, its just not worth it to them and, as BiTurbo said, they have nothing to prove.

You are correct sir. When you get your Veyron you won't have anything to prove. Let me know when you take delivery...
