2009 E350 side mirror auto-tilt when reversing

My 2009 E350 is my third E-class, having owned a 2003 and 2006. One feature I found quite useful on the two previous cars was the ability to set the right side mirror to adjust automatically for viewing the RR wheel when reversing, so as to avoid hitting curbs. Although the setting procedure is described in the 2009 owner's manual, I find I'm unable to get it to set. I called two dealerships, and was told that this feature has been "decontented". I am also a bit "decontented" to find this handy feature gone. Is there any way to restore it?

I cross-posted this thread to the W211 forum, but haven't yet gotten a perfectly clear answer...

Things that simplify the car is how MB got the JD Powers awards.

In park select right mirror, adjust for normal driving.

next, select reverse gear, adjust mirror for backing.

Leave right mirror selected, (if you select left mirror no reverse tilt).

done, if when you drive the mirror dose not return to drive position, well bad news.

BTW say Hi to Mike

Today I called Tele-Aid, asked about this feature, and was told that it was an option that had to be selected when the car was ordered, and that their records showed that my car was not so equipped. I asked if the option could be added after purchase, and was told no.

Next, I looked for this "option" on mbusa and in the E350 brochure, but found no mention of it, nor is it shown as being part of one of the option packages.

I can't seem to get a consistent answer from the dealers or from M-B. If anyone has a 2009 E350 that has been able to get the "mirror tilt down on reverse" setting to work, please let me know.

I got them to activate it on my 08 CLS550. Did not come with the car and was not in the instrument cluster menu.

Just got the car back from M-B of Palm Springs. It went in for correction of fuel gauge problem, and I asked to have the mirror tilt enabled. I think they did give it a good try, but found that the door control module would not accept the version coding change to allow "park assist" to be enabled. They think that even though the part number is the same for the DCM from 06 to present, DMCs manufactured after a certain date won't accept the change.

Tilt mirror and a number of other very nice and useful features are gone from MB now except in the S Class. This is one reason I still have my 06 ML500 and my 05 E.

Take the vehicle to the dealer and have them access the IC then go to control unit adaptation then into current menu selection and enable the mirror tilt function. You will not get a option in the cluster to turn it off or on but the mirror will tilt in reverse as long as the right mirror but is depressed. Most techs don't know about this sub menu.

Do you know if this feature can be enabled on a 2008 E320?

Thanks,
Mike

I looked into this a while back because I missed the feature too. What I found out is that starting with mid-07 models of the E class, MB disabled this feature in the software for cars sold in North America. I do not know why, but my dealer's guess was that too many people got confused by it. Anyway, it is possible to re-activate it but the dealers are reluctant to change the software settings. You might have better luck with an independent MB shop.
