2007 Ml 63 AMG lifter noise / knock

Hello to all, I am new here and also desperate
It all started with what I thought was a bad load of gasoline. Engine was making some kind of a rattling pinging sound, like a bad injection knock due to bad timing.
In the next weeks I’ve used random gas stations thinking is the gas but there was no change. Also, this noise was so random I started to ignore it, but I could only hear it during city driving and when the car was under powered
Was ok until about a week ago, I had to stop for 10 min to buy something and when I got back to the car and start it I almost had a heart attack, I heard from the top of the engine a rapid rattle for about a second which is sounded like bad lifters.
It always happens during the day while the car is hot, not in the morning when the oil is cold. What is also strange is that it is a random thing and it only happens after short stops, 5 to 15 min. If I let is sit for a longer period of time it will not do it.
I changed the oil way ahead of time just to eliminate an oil issue and it did not do any rattling for 2 days but now it started over again…. I am lost and pissed

Btw car is a ML63 with 63,000 miles on it

If anyone has any suggestions please help

Thank you and have a great day!

It's probably a long shot, but have you tried to get an OBD II Diagnostic readout. Great gadget to have handy in the garage. These vehicles have so many sensors all over the place, it may tell you of any problems. Or you can just take to a MB qualified mechanic for a diagnostic (about $200).

Thanks 63 Mike. Had in @ the dealer several times, car came back tested perfect 100%. I was able to fix the problem with a fresh oil change even tho I only had 4000 miles on the current one

SOunds to me like a clogged/bad hydraulic lifter, which would not show any codes in OBD electrnically. As painful as it might be, i would bring to dealer and have service tech ride with you in the car when the symptoms/noise is present.

My $.02 demosan

PS Hope the car is CPO with extended warranty.
