I will be updating my head unit this Monday. Needless to say, this has been a very painful process until I got some assistance from this forum, especially from Red Knight and konigstiger.

It's a crying shame we have to do their work for them. I always feel like they talk about me after I leave and say amongst one another "There's that pesky S class owner again. He always thinks he knows more than we do. Why can't he just drive the car and leave well enough alone."

Actually the way the SA's responded to my inquiry was actually kind of odd....they were very firm in their answer before even checking on what I was referring to (sort of a Yes I know what it is BUT we just won't do it for you) kind of way. When I asked if they were "sure" they became stern and just wanted to push me out the door.

I also got the same stern response over the phone by one of the SA (Happen during by second attempt to update my head unit). It's almost like they telling us..."We know what you're talking about but we rather you buy an 09 S550 to get that functionality since there really isn't any big difference between an 07' and an 09' "

Update my COMAND unit today. Got the birdeyes view for the NAV and real time traffic monitoring which is very useful if you live in Houston. Prior to the update, the COMAND unit would pick up my contact list from my iPhone and would neatly display a symbol by each phone number to indicate if they were mobile, work, home, etc.). After the update, all the symbols are the same and the systems doesn't appear to distinguish the different type of phone numbers for you.

Can't seem to get the DVD to work correctly. The car is in park, I can hear sound from the DVD but no picture and it tells me the picture is faded for the safety of the driver. I can skip scene b/c I can hear sounds for the next scene of the movie. It just doesn't display any video and the car is parked. Anyone has this same issue or is there something I'm not doing right?

The only thing you haven't done right is you must apply the parking brake before the picture will show up. Some MBs require this, some don't , but in the W221, it does.

As long as you are in Park and the Emergency Brake is activated, you should be able to see a picture.

If you get the VIM module from Midcity, your DVD will work all of the time. It also allows you to do a host of other functions in the NAV system and address book that are normally prevented while in motion .

NJS 430, thanks I received the disc in today's mail; I loaded the DVD and updated my maps; and then I put the disc in the mail this afternoon by Priority Mail. Thanks for your kind service.

A NAV that can't find a single starbucks unless you give it an address beforehand?

Pretty much every other Nav system including my 2006 Lexus allows me to find the nearest Company X. Plus with a 3G iPhone, I can locate more uptodate info. Why pay $200 for a map update that doesn't find the info I want. To me the Mercedes NAV has always been more of a "you need to know where you want to go". vs a more spontaneous I think I want to go to "Company Y" for dinner.
Ya ur right it seems like Lexus and Infinity etc...have more features then a Mercedes does sometimes and even though its just the little things its like im paying so much money for a Benz why doesnt it have this feature and a Lexus does...BUT i still love Mercedes

Last Friday the following was performed on our MY2007 W221:

"Perform COMAND software update. Update as per bulletin P-B-82.85/512h per clients request. Reset coding for parking assist and backup camera. Printed out revised pages for owners manual regarding updated COMAND and placed in glove box."

Paid 0.5 hour labor for the software update. Now have real-time traffic (don't know what birds-eye is intended to be) and DVD video with "park" & "e-brake on".

Thanks to konigstiger for the copy of the service bulletin mentioned above. Without it, I do not think the dealer would have installed. In fact, the SA mentioned the SM was pissed about the bulletin being available.

It seems when the consumer has the same information the "seller/manufacturer/author/you fill in the blank" has, it evens the playing field. That is why a free market economy works.

Why did you have to pay .5 hr of labor? I think most people, including me, on this board didn't have to pay anything to get their command unit updated.

The dealer's SM said the update was not covered by warranty.

MBUSA released the DTB inclusive of warranty codes to correct a number of malfunctions in the Telematics system - page 2 lists 15 malfunctions corrected by the update while page 3 list applicable warranty codes for the update.

Noticed something new about the update - I wonder if anyone else can confirm. While driving into Manhattan yesterday on the southbound Bruckner I entered my work destination - there was an accident on the Manahatttan leg of the triboro bridge - it routed me via the Deegan. Prior to the upgrade it never did that - always the Triboro. This morning repeated the same (no accident on the Triboro) and the routing was via the Triboro. I guess this updated version is now using the traffic info. I know on the European versions of Nav there is a "Dynamic Routing" setting which is supposed to do the same.

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this ?

Thanks

Guys, took my car to Rusnak Mercedes in Arcadia, CA today and told my SA "sometimes" my rearview cam works, sometimes dont (as it says on the DTB to qualify for the update)
After the entire day, what they told me was they did a "system scan" on the vehicle and did not find anything wrong with the rearview camera.....THEREFORE...they WILL NOT perform the update UNLESS I purchase the new DVD for $249 AND pay $135 for labor. WTF? What did you guys tell your SA to get them to do the update without having to jump through hoops?

Is that $249 tax and all? I paid only $230 for my disc tax and all. BTW, I didn't have to pay a dime for my comand update.

$249 plus tax for the disc (special order). They basically will not update the telematics unless they can obviously reproduce a symptom in the shop. Funny thing is, before I had the DTB they claimed such thing does not exist but with the DTB all of a sudden they seem to know it inside-out and will only find ways to explain how it will cost me $135 labor and $249 parts.
