Navigation Update for the new S Class

Has anyone updated the Navigation system with the Navteq 7.0 version DVD. If so, any idea whether there are any additional features that have been introduced (as in the Version 5.0) or is it purely a Navigation update. The DVD is priced same as the earlier versions - $199.00 plus tax and shipping (as per the Navteq site). To remove this ad, register today or login if you already are registered!

Thank you SIR. I think the 2008 cars came with Version 5.0 or may be even 6.0. This particular update (version 7.0) only came out in the end of November, therefore it is less likely that any of the cars bought before that would have come with Version 7.0, installed. Shall wait for your update. Another member of the forum "trumpet1" is very clued on, I shall send him a pm and find out on how to know the existing version in the car.

I understand either the dealer can retrieve this via SDS, or when inserting a new DVD to update the navigation database it will show both the version currently installed and the updated version installing.

PDI (pre-delivery inspection) stipulates the current version should be installed before the vehicle is delivered to customer. Therefore, anyone taking delivery NOV08 or after should have the dealer confirm the current v.7.0 map data is installed.

Thanks for the information, however, what I wanted to know was whether any more features have been added to the navigation system capability as such. In the version 5.0 "the time to destination" was some thing new and it does seem fairly accurate. My dealer told me that the version was 6.0 was a map update only. From what you have indicated, it appears that version 7.0 is also only a coverage (map) update.

Well, buying SDS isn't the obvious solution for an individual but don't you have any old Navigation disc? Insert your old disc and the screen shows the installed SW version and the one on the disc if it is different.

At this point in time, I agree with you that the only way to get the current version of Nav to be displayed is to insert a Nav disc (any version) into slot #1 of the changer, the message "audio format unknown" pops up on the screen, bypass this message by pressing down on the comand toggle button, then the version # will be displayed and it will question you what you want to do from that point on.
I am awaiting word from my tech if this is the only method of retrieving the data without having to go to the shop. Konigster - ASG- diesel benz- and others are pretty much saying the same thing I'm saying in this post.
I'll report what I find out so that we can all agree/understand what there is to know about this.
My feeling is, you're going to have to buy the disc most likely from your dealership anyway so go and let them do the install or simply read the instructions given in the insert of the DVD package.
BETTER YET
If everyone wants me to buy the DVD upfront, I'll be happy to and then everyone can pay me $20 plus shipping and we can share the same disc. There is no reason for us all to pay $200 for a disc we'll only need for one hour. I did that with version 5.0 as about 7 people borrowed my disc. Only about one week turnaround time. It's very simple to download yourself. Takes about an hour of mostly just waiting around for the upload to complete. I leave my car running just so the comand system doesn't shut down in the middle of the download.

I won't be upgrading until they fix the POS, I mean POI categories. I don't understand why I can't pull up names such as Starbucks, Sears, Office Max.. on the POI screen, let alone find them anywhere in the Nav listings. A NAV that can't find a single starbucks unless you give it an address beforehand?

Pretty much every other Nav system including my 2006 Lexus allows me to find the nearest Company X. Plus with a 3G iPhone, I can locate more uptodate info. Why pay $200 for a map update that doesn't find the info I want. To me the Mercedes NAV has always been more of a "you need to know where you want to go". vs a more spontaneous I think I want to go to "Company Y" for dinner.

Everyone interested please send me a PM so I can keep you guys in the proper order. Steveb was the first to PM me. Let me get the disc ASAP and load it myself and then I'll start taking orders on a first come, first serve basis. After I get your PM I will tell you right then where you are in the priority list. It will probably take a week to get a full turnaround. I will send it via UPS. Once I find out how much it costs to send it round trip , I'll post that approximate amount here on this thread but keep in mind it will vary a little. I will only send it to people within the lower 48 states . If the number of people wanting to partake in the sharing exceeds 15, we then may need a 2nd person to buy a disc and repeat this process. I'll keep everyone posted as to how much of a demand this is getting to be.

NAV CD

That doesn't sound like a bad idea. I would go with that. I paid $200 for the last cd and used and gave it away. I no longer had any use for it.

So far I have 4 people in line for the disc. I will do my best to get the disc this week. After I load it for myself, I will send it to steveb and then so on and so on. Please try to get it back to me as quick as you can as this could take 6 weeks to complete for around 8 people. If I get more than 8 people in the list, I may have to ask for a volunteer to do the same thing I'm doing. We'll see how it goes.

The way I did it before was the person who borrowed it put $25 to $30 (cash or check) in the disc jewel case prior to returning it to me instead of sending a separate letter with a check. After that, I looked at my PM list and I will ask you for your address, ph# as a backup contact, and then the process repeats itself.

So far I have the following people on the list and I have them listed in order

1.steveb9771
2.nkole
3.cablvr
4.markopolo
5.mmehtas
6.blevinson
7.MrTracy
8.Sanjay
9.vonbeeler

I can take the 8th person but after that I will have to put the orders on hold temporarily (at least for me).

If someone not on the list above would be willing to buy a disc and start your own list , it would be nice.

P.S. I will see if I can burn my version 5 just to see if I can make copies of the disc. If this is possible , then I can make all the copies of version 7 for everyone and send them to you. Has anyone attempted to burn a nav DVD successfully???
It probably is protected from copying but I'll try anyway using my v.5.

Hi Chief..I am sorry for the late reply...I am SURELY in...please count me for contributing and being part of the chain..Shall await your instructions how you want to go about it... Paying $199.00 (plus tax plus shipping) is waste especially since it can be installed by everyone if bought by one person and everyone contributes as suggested by trumpet1. I am more than happy to send you my contribution incl. mailing charges back and forth instantly. Thank you very much.

OK guys, I had to order the disc from Navteq and it will be at my house Wednesday, DEC. 10th. The dealerships don't even have them yet as they always announce the disc before producing them for dealerships. Even Navteq verified that info to me. My tech said I could get it faster if I ordered it myself and he was dead on right about that.

When I get my disc loaded , I will report to you all how it went , how much of an improvement it is (from what I will be able to tell), and also I really want to stress how we need to get quick turnaround from me to you on borrowing the disc as we now have 9 people on the list.

Please just place $30 in the case (check will be fine if you prefer it that way). This will reimburse me for everything including my shipping to you. I expect you to pay for the return shipping. I will then repeat the process as quickly as possible.

Regards

GREAT IDEA

I wish this was done with the last update. I spent $199 then after using it I gave it to the service adviser; I had no use for it. What a waste it was. I would much rather to be out of $30.
