These were the color of amber, and I would think they are so far down on the color scale as to be almost worthless except in industrial uses.

On another note, I went to a mall chain jeweler once to scout out 10-yr marriage rings, and I spotted a 3-stone ring set in a gold ring that was relatively inexpensive (but by no means cheap). When I asked to see it out of the display case, I noticed they set in gold to mask the fact that the stones were yellowish...remarkably so. Seemed like a scam.
Fancy yellow diamonds that are natural and untreated are exponentially more expensive than a colorless diamonds.

Diamonds lower on the color scale are sometimes set in yellow gold in an effort to mask the color as it would be easier to see in white/plat.

In my opinion and in the overwhelming opinion of the trade, the GIA and the AGS labs are at the absolute forefront of gemology grading and accuracy/strictness. EGLUSA is as well an amazing lab and considered somewhat "softer" than the others....and all though many knock the IGI for it is quite soft, it happens to be somewhat respected in the trade and is extremely connected to De Beers.

I haven't seen any GIA reports that have grade on them (although I have been out of the industry for over a year)

And my 'order' was not typed out correctly. I said EGL was the worse, followed by IGI and AGS. What I mean't was EGL was the worse (European Lab) then IGI would be 3rd, AGS is 2nd and GIA is 1st.

That is the order in which I was talking about, I guess it just came out in a funky way.

Its all good The GIA started cut grade this year. I just got training on cut grade not too long ago, it will take what others thought to be "ideal" and stand it on its head!!! We should soon be losing "ideal" in our lingo. Heres a copy of a new cert with cut:

I recently started shopping for a diamond. Man, its confusing. This thread helped alot. I noticed that Bluenile.com has some of the best prices around for good quality GIA cert. diamonds. I haven't been to New York yet...going at the end of the month. I'll see what's there. The cut grade is fairly new for GIA and I was told that getting all three (Cut, Polish, Symmetry) graded excellent is rare. Seems like Bluenile has plenty with all three graded excellent. And the prices are pretty good $6-$8K for a little over a carat.

Has anyone else here ordered a diamond online from places like Bluenile.com? I'm really thinking about it. The other problem is my honey really likes a certain setting at this Jewelry store in Rhode Island, but his diamonds there are way overpriced. he was asking over $10K for a 1.02 carat E color VS2 with a cut grade of Very Good. Bluenile.com blows that out of the water for almost $3K less. I want to get the setting there and have him put the diamond I buy in it. I'm nervous about this since I didn't buy the stone from him. Should I be? Should I try to get it all done at one place? It just seems like Bluenile's diamonds are too good of a deal....whats the catch???

So many questions..........I hate diamonds already!!LOL

The best tip for buying tip is this: make it final. Due dilligence and investigation before you buy, but after you buy, don't even walk by the jewelry store ever again. Don't get it appraised 5 years later, don't compare it against anyone elses, or anything like that. Finally, attach a good romantic story to it and give it a name, and then the gem is priceless regardless of quality. For instance, my wife's engagement diamond set on platinum is called "The Krasnapolsky" for reasons that shall remain undisclosed at this time, but it always trumps anything else in a conversation...

Don't worry about not spending much on it. It's all you can afford, what does that matter? As long as you love her, and she loves you, material items don't mean a thing. Love is the most valuable thing in the world. No diamond in the world is worth more.

It doesn't take much to spout off all the bs women want to hear. The question is why is he telling a bunch of guys on a mercedes board? I save lines of crap like that for when I'm trying to get a girl.

I have a guy in New York that says he can get me a triple Excellent (Cut, Polish, Symmetry) for $8,400. I didn't find out the color or clarity yet. Looks like New York isn't all that cheap either. Still looking.....sucks. LOL
