Seems like a power change causes the lettering to fade out? Perhaps I should have turned my sound on.
Reminds me of the fancy meeting room glass that becomes opaque when a small charge is passed through. Maybe this is the same material.

At any rate, clearly an improvement over the bogus spray coatings being sold to beat photo tickets.

Its called LCD privacy glass.. You can buy it in sheet and make your own. But dont get caught using it on a license plate since its illegal to cover a plate... You are better of buying the spray for the plate that absorbs light when the flash of a photo radar or redlight camera goes off in effect making the plate appear a solid white color and you cant get the numbers. I think the spray is made of the same material that is painted onto the letter and numbers of the plate that makes them stand out when a photo is taken. But a advantage of the spray is its clear and you basically cant get caught unless you walk up to a cop and tell them.

The spray is bogus. They tested it on one show, maybe mythbusters, and the plates showed up on film just fine.

The hair spray ladies use so they heairdoo holds in place is the best thing to spray your plates with. It's common knowledge for a long time. I think spies discovered it long ago, many people are using it....i think those sprays being sold could be just rebadged hair sprays.

They use this product in buildings too, on bathroom windows next to the tub, shower stalls, bedrooms etc. Travel channel had a program about cool restrooms and one of them had this kind of glass on the door. It's connected to the door lock, so when you lock the door from the inside, the transparent glass door became opaque. People who didn't know were hesitant to use the restroom. I believe this kind of glass goes for $250-300 per sf installed.

I watch mythbusters episode about beating the cops and they never test it that I can remember..

http://phantomplate.com/

I know people that use this and other people who have plate covers and so far no tickets. You might be thinking about the "anti" laser spray that "limits" laser range. But the spray or cover will only help you with photo enforced tickets...

For SUV owners a nice coat of mud on the plate works also...

Its otherwise known as electrochromatic glass, and all you have to do is run a current through is and it goes from transparent to opaque. PERFECT for fooling cops, cameras, etc. Genius if you ask me, I had never even thought of it in that applications. Can't wait till they start making car windows out of it. INSTANT TINT!!

Even if you had it turned off, they'd get you just for having something in front of the plate, which is illegal in most places.

yeah but it's pretty much a clear piece of material, have you ever seen those people who drive around with the dark yellow pieces of plastic that cover their plates, you can barely read the plate from two feet away..

Anything at all over the plate would be pretty noticeable. And the orange stuff, I haven't seen anyone driving around in NY in a long time with that kind of stuff on...

My dad had these clear plate protectors on his old van (just a clear piece of plastic attached on top -- and bought right here in a local Auto Barn), got a pretty hefty fine (couple hundred dollars iirc) just for having them on.
