For pure ballistics and distance shooting most of us shoot 6.5mm because they have a better selection of really good bullets that are aerodynamically great, have really high ballistic coeffecients and data table to make it happen.
I just found this thread and really enjoy shooting. I shoot competitively with pistol and rifle almost every weekend.( You want to talk about a hole to throw money at. I could have purchased a c63 cash for what I have spent shooting in the last 3 years)
I have several ar's 2 or 3 bolt guns a couple of shotguns and way to many pistols. I will include a pic.
Make sure you clear that bed. Would'nt want to be showing that collection to a girl on a first date now

right. sure. If I Was running tumble bunny 5.56 I might agree, but I am not. The problem with long range accuracy on an AR15 Iron sight is the floating front sight in the circle. This is solvable with a scope.

But the real problem is the pistol grip which is destabilizing in the prone position over the much more positive resting position of other rifle bodies. Good, non expert, shooters can over come this and shoot 500 yards with even 5.56. My 13 year old is not that advanced.

Like I said, I shoot competitively. Different guns for different disciplines. Certain guns are for steel challenge, others for IPSC, then there is 3-gun where you get to shoot them all sometimes on the same stage.. We shoot out to 300yds regularly and I use 55gr most of the time to that distace. If you get out past ther and need to hit a 8 inch flash target then you change over to heavy bullets and crank in a few clicks of elevation for the difference in velocity between the 55 and 77. 8"plates at 500 are pretty easy once you learn the gun and bullets inter-relationship.
My favorite is the pistol shooting though. IPSC is a great game and is alot harder than it looks..
Its all a hobby, you can spend it on cars, guns, boats, or women. You might as well have fun with it because you cant take it with you.

I picked up my M1A last week. She's getting ready to undergo minor surgery here to replace the stock spring guide with a new national match guide to smooth out the action.

I put a Sadlak spring guide in mine and the improvement was immediate. I'd also recommend eventually getting a forged bolt assembly, but they tend to be hard to find.

Good catch on the BMGs. That's out getting painted now. I'll post up family pic (.223, .308, .338LM, and .50BMG) once I get all my hardware back. I actually picked up the Springfield used. Guy only put 20rnds through it and sat in his safe ever since. Snagged it for $1250.

Definitely. If they ship out the day I order I always get it the next day. I used to drive over there during lunch for supplies but they closed their only walk-in day since the front office is a bit small.

Rifle Range - Read before Watching

This is an exceptionally lucky sportsman!
The guy is shooting a 50CAL. Watch the dust when he fires. The steel
plate target was 1000 yards away. You can hear the ping of the hit;
then the bullet comes back and hits the earmuff on his head. The
footage is amazing. You can hear the bullet as it tumbles through the
air on its course back toward the shooter. He's lucky it hit the dirt
first. Turn up the sound... You can even hear the bullet head back.
He is okay, and obviously very lucky. The bullet grazed his temple.

What a difference a half an inch makes!

Anyone knows a source to get high end scopes at a good price? Used scopes are OK.

I'm looking for Zeiss, NF, S&B or Swarovski.

50 CAL BMG, is a 3000 Ft Per second round.
Ricochet from a 100 yards would be instantaneous.

Of the ones you have mentioned I would only look at nightforce. Excellent glass, military proven and used, cost ratio much better in either new or used condition..
There are several outlets for all the scopes you mention except for Nightforce as they protect their dealers. If they find out a dealer is selling at cost or much below suggested retail they cut off the dealer.
Scmidt and Bender is an excellent scope but good grief they are expensive(and for me to say that is a big deal) they are built for abuse and have greatt glass again.
I wouldnt waste my time on Zeiss,Swarovski, or alot of the other high end scope guys as they just dont cut it. Wont reproduce elevations or widage as they build lash into the turrents so thre clicks up and then 3 down dont take you back to the same point. Of the lower priced but will sometimes still be priced like the high end guys Leupold still makes a couple of really high quality scopes that I would never turn away from. Most of the Mark4 line and some of the VX3's are really good.
Be careful about all your purchases of scopes now over the net as there are counterfit scopes being made that look exactly like some of the high end jobs. If it looks like to good a deal, then it probably is.

cc - i'm a HUGE fan of Nightforce scopes, too. over on the 50BMG board,
member "Don" is a vendor and sells new as well as used. prices are
decent and he has a good reputation in backing up his transactions
and sold items.

I picked up a Nightforce 8-32x56 Benchrest from EuroOptics. 2DD reticule.

It will be mounted on Badger Ordnance 20MOA mount and Max50 rings.

Pics or ban

Did you lap your rings when you mounted the scope? I don't have the alignment tools nor the lapping tools. Just wondering if it's worth it?...

yes, i lapped them...a little. wasn't going to but buddy had the little rod so
i half heartedly made the effort. i'm like a little kid...i just want to get the
scope on the rifle and shoot !!

it's on a Serbu BFG. ugly but effective for my recreational uses. consistently
placing 2 MOA if the operator isn't constipated, using the proper ammo etc.
When Talon manuf was still around, i stumbled on lot # which was super
consistent. then the cheap ammo dried up and now it's much more expensive
to shoot....though I have the gear to handload in the basement.
