Just curious where do you guys buy assault riffles? Is this like buying a shotgun? What are the limitations, and restrictions I think I'm going to get a arsenal togather? To remove this ad, register today or login if you already are registered!

Where in NY do you live? NYC has that ridiculous Assault Weapon Ban, there's only 2-3 semi autos you can buy around here.

Then you shouldn't have a problem buying the evil black rifles, I might be wrong but I think it's the same process as buying any other rifle. Which one are you looking to get?

Just started looking, are some limited just to the military or is it open market? I did see some amazing footage of the XM8.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63cxeEq5gUk

You're not gonna get an XM8, the X stands for experimental, the army never ordered them in bulk. I know you can get an AR-15 in NY, but I'm looking at the Barrett M468, which you can get in semi-auto civilian issue. The 6.8mm round is larger and significantly more powerful than the 5.56. If you want to put somebody down that's your thing.

For home defense though? Nothing works better than a shotgun, good old pump action 870.

6.8 SPC is not a cheap round, I'd prefer an M4 type rifle in 7.62X39, cheap round with lotsa power. I've read in the latest Special Weapons that 6.8 was developed as a CQB round and the ballistics are not that great at farther ranges.

1. It's better than the 5.56 at longer ranges.
2. You're not going to snipe a human being who's breaking into my house.

Thanks for the info. not really for home protection though more like worst case scenarios.

Where would I buy one though? Does anyone around here know of a store, how do you go about it?

I'd still go with 7.62X39, for some reason I just like that round and 5.56s and 308NATOs are quite expensive to stockpile. If it will be your SHTF rifle then you want to have lotsa practice with the rifle, hence the cheap round would be better suitable here as well. You can practice with it often and not break the piggie bank.

You won't get an "X" model weapons. Generally they are destroyed if never purchased. M14, AR15, AR10, you can pick plenty of those up. P20, HK Rifles, they are all available to civilians. It is the same process as buying a shotgun, at least here in NJ. Have Firearms ID card, will travel.

dumb this down a bit, I need the manufacturer, and model numbers. I'd like to browse online then go to a store after having some info. Yeah this will be my SHTF rifle, and want one that is reliable and the lighter and easier to shoot the better.

Hell get an M14. You can pour sand in it and still take out an elephant.

Assault rifle is such an ugly descriptive term. It is Primarily used by the anti-gun crowd to label it as evil. A Semi-automatic rifle is a much nicer & accurate term.

My SHTF/fun gun is a Bushmaster AR15 (XM15-E2S) w/Aimpoint M3 red dot sight & a Surefire M910A foregrip light.

As for all the goodies. Buy everything you can now, before H.S. 6257 get's passed. (e.g., 30rd magazines, telescopic/folding buttstocks, pistol grip for shotguns, flash suppressors, bayonet mounts, etc..)

I buy all my toys at the local gunshop!

Aren't they trying to go after aimpoint sights too?

In you situation there's nothing I'd like more than an Arsenal AK.. check them here: http://www.arsenalinc.com/about.htm

Or you can get a Saiga in the same round for around $300. http://www.raacfirearms.com/Saiga_option.htm

The AK-type weapon is simple to use, fairly accurate/powerful and doesn't require too much care. Ammo is cheap but I've mentioned that before.

They are thinking of deploying Metal Storm against tanks and armored vehicles which I thought was a stretch but they actually backed it up with facts so it made some sense.
