Question Nikon D40 or Canon G10/G9 or ?

Hey guys, I am looking in the $500 range for something that is great for taking jewelry close up pics for ebay ads etc. and for snapping cool car pics... Ritz camera has the Nikon D40 with 2 lenses for 600. Any thoughts or suggestions are much appreciated.

Go with the D-40. It will do all your basic work.

I'm buying a camera "system" too and right now, it's between a Canon xti and a Canon D50....and some painfully expensive lenses.

A Leica Noctilux 50mm ƒ0.95 ASPH lens is $ 11,000. That is painful.

I have been using a Canon G9, and find it quite acceptable. The large display is nice, it is small enough that people think you are only taking a snap shot so they act more natural. It has just about every feature I'd like, except interchangable lenses.

Get Canon XSi instead.

If you think XSi is not so good, then 5D MKII will be a good choice, at least it can shoot HD movie.

Send a message via AIM to Untertürkheim
I would go with the Nikon, they make excellent lenses and I have always been happy with their products.

It is the XSi and not the XTi. Pffft....the mind said one thing, the hand typed something else....

I like Nikon and they also make great lenses but their camera's are a step behind the Canons in the lower ranges. If I had an unlimited budget or a real use, I would probably buy the Nikon D-700.

I had a 1.2 lens in my old Minolta system. Kind of sad to see thousands of dollars of really good lenses just become door stops. *sigh*

G-9 is a pretty good all around camera. If I was travelling around and wanted something small and handy, I think that would be the camera of choice. It's now replaced by the G-10.

I don't see why it shouldn't do a pretty good job of it. Why don't you buy it from someplace like Costco and try it out? The only thing that may be a problem is lighting. Mind you, it's something you need to learn regardless of what camera you buy.

Here is a pretty good and honest test on the G-9.

I am thinking you are waiting for the G55 to come out.

As long as it has A-mount, your Minolta lens still can be used in Sony DSLR Alpha.
