Severe Mango Allergy!

I've been eating mangos for years, but within the last year i've been slicing them myself. Before I always had the presliced ones.

Anyways, last Tuesday (1 week ago) I peeled a mango and ate it like an apple biting into it after it was peeled. Well on thursday i woke up and my lips were very sore and the surrounding area was very red. It got a little worse and on Saturday I put some hydrocortisone on it, sunday stayed the same and yesterday the itching became worse.

I woke up this morning with a massive rash on my chest, arm and cheeks and it was moving up towards my eyes. I took myself to the ER where they said I had a severe delayed reaction to the mango. Apparently in the oil and rind of mangos is the same oil as poison ivy and sumac! I was unaware of that and had asked why hadn't this happened before, they say it can just happen.

So right now i'm on prednisone, zantac, clariton and benidryl. Doc said take these for 5 days and I should start seeing improvement tomorrow. I took the day off of work and am working from home tomorrow. I just hope it stops spreading, it is still very itchy and I am a mess to look at!

Anyone here have a mango allergy? I was completely unaware of the poison ivy/sumac content. Just a warning for those of you who don't know!!!!

My girlfriend reacts to it pretty strongly, but only if she handles the skin/rinds. I have a mild reaction if I eat the skin or rub it on my face, but not nearly as bad as her. I've heard that most people react in some way to the rinds.

Could it be to the pesticides on the rind of the mango?

I suppose, but I believe it to be the urushiol induced contact dermatitus directly from the mango rind and/or skin.

I will never have another mango in my life. I want to rip my chest off and my face looks like a damn clown!!!

I'm washing all of my clothes tonight and my sheets again, i'm paranoid now...

Most mangoes found for sale in the US are actually from Mexico.

So then why did you ask?

edit: I re-read the previous post exchange and I gotcha. Most storebought mangos on the West Coast have done that to my girl....

at least you got allergy on magno, take some medication to ease your pain, I have on a pine nuts, a nightmare, hard to avoid it lately, many restaurants put it in food without posting it in the menu.

your zantac and claritin having nothing to do with your food allergy. zantac is heartburn medication and claritin is allergy medication that treats allergies that causes stuffy nose, sinus congestion, and other upper respiratory ailments. not sure why your doctor put you on either of those unless you already had allergies or you are suffering heartburn, or if for some odd reason, the mango is causing your stomach to produce too much acid, which is unlikely.

for future reference, first thing you ever take in an allergic reaction, like when you are starting to break out in hives, rashes, or get extremely itchy, is benadryl. VERY IMPORTANT.

and yah, good choice with prednisone for suppressing the immune response a little and helping decrease the inflammation.

Mango tree sap is nasty, nasty stuff. It's got nothing to do with where the
mango came from or what chemicals were used on it. I've gotten
really bad rashes from mowing the lawn under the trees.

Always make sure there is no sap on the mango before you cut it and
wash your hands a lot when you are cutting them up.
