Maine Voters Shoot Down Gay Marriage Law

From the Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine -- Maine voters have torpedoed a state law that would have allowed gay couples to marry.

With 84 percent of the precincts reporting, gay-marriage foes had 53 percent of the vote Tuesday.

The outcome amounts to a heartbreaking defeat for the gay rights movement -- particularly since it occurred in a northeastern New England state, the corner of the country most supportive of gay marriage.

At issue was a law passed by the Maine Legislature last spring that would have legalized same-sex marriage. The law was put on hold after conservatives launched a petition drive to repeal it in a referendum.

Gay marriage has now lost in every single state -- 31 in all -- in which it has been put to a popular vote. Gay-rights activists had hoped to buck that trend in Maine.

I bet guys all over West Hollywood are stamping their feet in anger tonight.

i don't have a gripe of some type of civil union so that gay couples can
have legal rights but the word "marriage" imo should be kept for
couples of the opposite sex.

I think the vote had less to do with gays than it did to send a message to Washington. Even from New England, people are fed up.

Don't forget the slim margins, I'm sure we'll be lectured about how it will pass next year.

I absolutely and wholeheartedly don't care if gay people marry. It is completely none of my business. I'm for freedom and it doesn't hurt me one bit if gay people get married.

You clearly don't know how the Gays in West Hollywood work.

Something Pro-Gay happens: Gays go out and party, pack Nightclubs, and spend lots of money celebrating the win.

Something Anti-Gay happens: Gays go out and party, pack Nightclubs, and spend lots of money, whilst rallying around building support for the next equality push.

Glad to see I'm on your minds boys

....Especially you MG.

So I take it you've got no problem with someone marrying 3 or more people? How about a father marrying his daughter, or a brother marrying his sister? Is this none of your business as well?

Not an extreme or absurd example at all, in fact, there are plenty of people that would like to see this. While it is fine to be in favor of gay marriage, I was just challenging the reasoning behind your opinion. It seems that you are really not OK with anyone getting married when it doesn't hurt you, you're just ok with gays getting married.

Well, it's not like any number of well reasoned arguments on either side will likely change either of our opinions. I'm fine with that.

For me I'm fine with gays marrying and I don't fear the slippery slope of people marrying peccarries, ocelots and Herman Miller Aeron chairs.

And while I disagree with your view, I do respect your view. But I am always interested in the reasoning people have behind their views, even if I don't agree with them.

As for the slippery slope, I do see this as a possibility based on how the decision to allow gay marriage is being made. Especially all of the Constitutional interpretations in favor of gay marriage.

I really don't see all those examples you put out being an "issue" in our lifetime. Those people are fighting for the Laws to turn in their favor as well, as we speak, yet we hear nothing of it, and it's pushed so far back.

In America, it's all about having mass population on your side, kind of unfortunately in many cases, Gays are a large and continuously more and more influential group, this is why they can put up such a good fight to get the Laws to treat them equally, and why they can at least educate at least SOME people as to how, and "why" they are the the people that they are.

In the 70s, nobody would have dreamed that gay marriage would even be a topic of discussion. Things change. Decisions made today can have an impact in 5 or 10 years down the road. Doesn't have to be a lifetime. The Constitutional grounds that some are arguing to allow gay marriage could also be the precedent to allow other types of marriage. There is no Constitutional right to marry, so advocates of Gay marriage argue on the right to privacy. I'd love to hear someone who believes this covers gay marriage explain how it wouldn't cover something like polygamy.

As for the "population on your side", I think it is quite obvious that the population is NOT on the side of gay marriage. Every single allowance of gay marriage in this country has been granted by the courts. Every single time the issue has been put to the voters, it has been rejected. That's not to say that the popular view on this won't change in the future, but all of the laws allowing gay marriage have been against the will of the people which is a shame.
