Bosch +4 & Hot Coil Packs

I have W215 2002 CL600. I'm only putting out 367 hp and 391lb/ft of torque (I did it have it on the dyno and I'm not reading it off of the owner's manual). My mechanic recommended that he can switch out the oem spark plugs and replace them with the Bosch +4 Platinum Spark Plugs along with some hot coil packs. In addition, he said that he can flash the ecu, throttle body, change the fuel filter and injectors (from 1000 microns to 1500 microns). Furthermore, all of these minor changes can give me atleast a 10% increase in hp and torque.

Has anyone tried this on a non-turbo Benz? I know that if I had a '03 600, I have alot more room to play with cause of the turbos. I think Renntech can turn it into a 65 almost. Anyway, any input is appreciated.

Thanks,

Mohammed

You can't compare independent dyno results to the numbers in the owner's manual. For one thing, factory numbers are engine dyno, and your numbers are probably a chassis dyno. Chassis dyno numbers will always be significantly lower due to drivetrain losses. Also, different dynos read differently, so comparing numbers from different dynos is meaningless.

Of the mods he suggested:
  • Plugs and coil packs: Since the ignition system has a significant effect on emissions, most companies use good parts, so there's very little room for improvement. I don't know about Mercedes, but from what I've seen with other companies the OEM system is just as good as aftermarket (if not better). There are some gains to be had from different plugs (this topic alone could fill several threads), but on a stock car there's probably better HP/$ mods out there. If you're due for a plug change, the +4's probably wouldn't hurt, but if not I wouldn't bother.
  • ECU: Ask him what tune he's flashing it with, and make sure it's a reputable tuner for these cars. I'd recommend researching what tune you want, then getting it from an authorized retailer.
  • Throttle body: There are aftermarket throttle bodies available, but I haven't had any experience with them, so no comment.
  • Fuel filter and injectors: Larger injectors don't increase power on their own. As you add boost, you engine also requires more fuel, and can eventually reach a point where it requires more fuel than your stock fuel system (injectors and pump) can supply. I guarantee you haven't maxed out your fuel system without adding forced induction.
As for the fuel filter, it's there for a reason. Substituting a larger (allows more detrimental material through) filter is not the correct way to increase fuel flow (not that you need to increase fuel flow, anyway).
Hope this helps!

Many MB's don't like the bosch +4 plugs, The std plugs are very good so don't bother. Each coil pack does one cylinder bank, good luck finding a aftermarket coil pack that's as good as the std one.

The fuel filter will only help if it is blocked (poor servicing)

Fuel injectors won't give you any more power, they are more than enough for that engine.

A throttle body helps on turbo/superchagerd engines and some high revving/flowing engines, your car makes lots of torque, a throttle body won't help.

About all I would suggest is a ECU flash, from what your mechanic has told you that you can do, I would be picking someone else to be doing that for you. They don't sound like they know what they are doing!!!!!

It would be good to understand that Bosch +4 plugs are K-Mart specials and these plugs are ONLY sold in the USA.

Your Mercedes came with better plugs.

Ausmbtech

Thanks guys for the input. It definitely helps to get some insight before undertaking a risky task.

Ausmbtech--

With regards to the ecu flash, what exactly will it do? I know that there's a way that i can reset the ecu myself by turning the ignition halfway and stepping on the accelerator which would return the car to factory style instead of the getting used to my driving style. I've done it and it works temporarily. However, are you talking about something along the lines of going to Renntech or Kleeman?

Thanks.

Safe and easy bet if you don't want to push the limits is powerchip group.

The reset with the accelerator pedal resets the adaptive learning for the accelerator pedal, thats it.

A ECU flash actually changes the ignition timing and fuel mixture programing too give more power. Being a non turbo don't expect massive gains.

The biggest gains on your engine are to the torque curve betweeen 2500rpm and 5000rpm. This is where you you will feel it every day, don't worry about the KW improvement, it's the extra 30-40Nm that you will feel.
